Adobe Reader

I don't know... it seems like Adobe Reader hangs Firefox sometimes. This has happened for a while with many versions of FF. My connection is fairly fast as is my computer. I tried the options in Adobe Reader to not have it open in a FF window and instead load the program separately but it doesn't seem to obey that. And it's just slow in general. I hit clicking a PDF on accident and having it take a long time to load up, freezing FF in the process.

I seen something called Adobe Reader Speedup which is used for tweaking and removing a lot of plugins from loading with it. Appearantly there is like 50-70 plugins that load with it, but most people don't need them at all. I went with the Speedup default settings and it just broke Reader so I reverted. I don't know if this is kind of a shady tweak program or I just didn't use the right settings.

Anyone use that speed up and have it work well? Or something else I can do to Reader to have it load faster or not hang FF sometimes? Or even a different reader altogether?

Have you tried Foxit Reader yet? That's what I use to read .pdf files and it's much much much better than Adobe Reader.

just make it open in acrobat window, not in firefox. it can hang IE too, but not so often or esily.

Ditto, I haven't been using it very long but so far I'm very happy with Foxit. Small and fast, much better than Adobe in my experience.

I've been using it at home for over a year now, and I like it so much I removed Adobe Reader from all the PCs at work and replaced it with Foxit. It works really well and opens much more quickly, too.

Cool, thanks for the Foxit Reader suggestion. I will try that out tomorrow.

And yes, I wanted to make it open in an Acrobat window instead of Acrobat inside of a FF window (I heard this generally helps this issue), but the option that I simply disabled to do that seemed to be ignored, and didn't make a difference, since PDFs still loaded normally inside of a FF window.

But with the good reports of Foxit, that may be all I need if it works well enough that I can stop using Adobe Reader. Yeah I finally bothered with the 'Read out Loud' feature today. I just wanted to hear it on some technical/school PDFs to see how it sounded out of curiosity. Needless to say I was LOL, but anyway most of the "features" of Adobe Reader are not needed at all by me, so a simple viewer with basic features (Foxit sounds like it'll do) will work for me. Thanks all
