Adobe Reader 6.0 Will Not Run

I have had Adobe Acrobat Reader 6.0 running on my 3.2 Dell with XP Pro for sometime without issue, albeit slow to load compared to versions prior.

All of a sudden it would not load. After launching it opens with the Acrobat Window that says Adobe Acrobat 6.0, but never gets beyond this point.

I uninstalled 6.0 and the 2.0 photo program that comes with it. I rebooted, both cold and hot restarts, and then installed again. No Luck, same results. I tried installing by saving the file and then running the install and I tried by opening the file at download setup.

Do I need to go into the registry and delete something? If so, tell me where and I'll do regedit and try that.

Help is greatly appreciated.

Reader 6.0 is sh|t. Uninstall and install 5.0 or 5.5. I hate acrobat/pdf's with a passion, but Reader 6.0 is just to much. How did they make this slower anyway?

I had the same problem with Reader 6.0. Try deleting temporary files (.tmp) and restarting. Reader will try to load all of the temp files before it opens.

I hate 6.0 with a passion too, along with all pdf files.

I have searched the web for 5.0 or 5.5 but they all keep sending me back to adobe for 6.0.

I would greatly appreciate if you could/would email 5.0 to me.

Thanks,
John

Coincidence this post showed up today. Last night I noticed I was getting a lot of "application hanging" errors in Event Viewer. Had narrowed it down to Acrobat, but wasn't aware of inherent problems with v6.0. Went back to 5.1 today. Don't know when I upgraded to 6.0, but I'll try to remember to keep away from it in the future.

another thing to watch for will all versions of acrobat is to make sure to check your task manager after you exit acrobat to make sure the program file kills itself. acrobat.exe can take up to 40 mb of ram and still run long after the program is closed. every time i view a .pdf online i make sure to kill the task in task manager because sometimes it will sit there up to 30 minutes or more and degrade system performance. the people at adobe have been aware of this issue since version 5.0 and have yet to solve it. just something to look out for for all you acrobat users :)

pdfs are quite possibly one of the best things to happen to the web in YEARS!

And 6.0.1, although slow, seems to work better than 6.0 did. Had to fix that for someone just yesterday (led to a night of drinking in fact).

Which browser are you using? I don't have that problem with the 5.x version of Acrobat reader and Mozilla Firefox 0.8 and 0.9. (Although I did used to have that problem in the distant past.)

Unforgiven is right. The Acrobat Reader process seems to hang quite often after the application is seemingly shut down, particularly out of the browser. I've made it a habit after leaving a web-based pdf file to check the task manager processes. Nearly half the time it is out there, spinning like crazy.
