Adobe Premiere / After FX rig ~ 1200 USD

Hey there,
its time again to get a new computer. I look for a machine that is mainly used for rendering / editing HD videos in Adobe Premiere / After FX and a bit for Gaming (can't miss Skyrim!)....

Would be awesome if you could get me some pointers of what might be a good config. Price for everything (except monitors / keyboards / mouse) should be around 1200 USD.

Maybe we can squeeze some SSD for the OS and 1 TB harddrive in there? What do you think?

Hi, I'm just going to borrow from another post I made for a user of a similar budget, with some changes. Shipping included:

Mobo Asus P8Z68-V LE $130
CPU 2600K $307 ($280 if picked up from microcenter + you get discount on mobo)
Cooler CM Hyper 212+ $26 or Thermalright HR-02 Macho $50
RAM Mushkin 8GB 1600 $50 ($40 AR)
GPU MSI 6950 2GB $265 ($240 AR)
HDD Hitachi 7K1000.D 1TB $106 [used to be $76... prices went up due to flooding in Thailand] or 7K3000 2TB $157
SSD Crucial M4 64GB $110 or Crucial M4 128GB $200 [could use part of it as scratch disk for Adobe?]
ODD Samsung DVD-RW $18
PSU XFX Core 650 $80 ($50 AR)

That's $1092 ($1027 AR) to $1257 ($1192 AR).

Then the case - really just choose what you like, there are plenty of options in the 60-150USD range that you can't go wrong with.

The mobo isn't dual-GPU compatible... If you want that consider Asrock Extreme3 or Gigabyte Z68XP-UD3. The PSU can handle even 6950 crossfire.

If you don't OC, get the i7-2600 and drop the aftermarket cooler. Or just get 2500K to save some money, though it won't be as fast in video encoding.

EDIT: I should add that you might need 16GB of RAM for HD video editing. I'd try 8GB first and buy another 8GB only if it's not enough.

You rock man! Thanks! But is the MSI 6950 2GB one of those GFX cards that play nicely with the Adobe software? I thought there are some that give you an extra rendering / real time editing boost or was that just 2 years ago so?

Oh you mean CUDA? Only works with NVIDIA cards. I've read Adobe CS5 supports it but I don't know any details. The 6950 2GB is priced right between the 560 ti and 570, and it performs accordingly but has more VRAM, hence I picked that.

Yes, Adobe Premiere supports CUDA. The 570 is officially supported (edit: I think! I couldn't find it listed.) The 560ti - and practically anything else with Fermi and 1GB RAM - should work too, but you have to hack it.

Yeah, it is probably worth taking Lehtv's build and swapping the GPU for a 560 Ti if you don't mind doing a small "hack" (edit a text file).

Oh, and HDD prices are out of control right now, but the Samsung F3R is still "reasonable" at $100.

Got this kind of setup now with an ASUS P8Z68-V LE motherboard, the i2600k and a 570 GTX gfx card. Should rock! Thanks everyone! Bought a 1 TB Seagate HD for 129 Euro... ridiculous... but whatever..

I figured it wouldn't matter much. I know I get raped here with Euro prices :X
Thanks! I'll get everything tomorrow... now I have to be productive and work until Skyrim screws up my productivity!

Haha and I thought I get rick rolled. Well I'm already like this!!! 😀 At least there is no new Fallout on the Horizon so once I'm done with it I can get back to business!
