Adjusting an T-Bird 1.33 multiplier

Having just built a new rig and reading every AMD OC article I can get my hands on, I am a little confused.

The articles always talk about physically modifying the CPU to adjust the CPU multiplier. However, in the BIOS of my motherboard, Soyo Dragon Plus, there is an adjustment for the CPU multiplier which seems to adjust the speed of the CPU without modifying the chip.

Any thoughts?

Any links to good OC info or results databases would be appreciated.

You can adjust the multiplier setting if the L1 bridges are "unlocked" meaning they are all connected. Your default multiplier setting is 10. I would try the default voltage with a multiplier of 11-11.5, and see how it runs. I wouldn't raise the cpu voltage much, unless you have a copper heatsink, such as the thermalright sk6 or swiftech 462.

your 1.33 should be factory unlocked so you don't have to worry about physical modding. newer bios's do have a setting to adjust the multiplier but no effect will be had if your proc was locked, but you should be good to go.

Most 1.33 Ghz is unlock. Try adjusting the multiplier from 10.0 to 10.5. Up the vcore a bit to 1.80v (just to make sure it POSt stable).

Reboot the PC. If the PC detect 1.396 Ghz....u r already O/Cing. Play around w/ the bios settings (make sure u know).

Generally, the 1.33 GHz CPU had the potential to hit 1.5 Ghz w/ decent setup. U didn't tell us the cooler u have...so check ur temp if u r O/Cing.

Interesting that AMD would provide the chips already unlocked now. Appearantly that is something new they are doing?

Anyway, great, saves having to modify it and voiding the warranty. In as far as the heatsink, as embarassing as it is, it is a Retail CPU and stock heatsink (Yuk).

The original idea was to get a Volcano 5 and OEM proc, but when it came time to order 2 things changed my mind. 1) Newegg was out of Volcano 5's and did not have an "in stock" date available (Turns out they came back in stock 2 days later) an 2) Neweggs OEM proc. return policy is not very good (7 days if I remember correctly).

So I made the decision to get the retail package and then get the Volcano later, if needed. As I write this, the proc. is set to 11x/136, 1.80V and the temp as reported by the MB are 23c/41c (no load). Running the Sandras burnin program raises the temp to 46c.

SiSoft Sandra reports the CPU as a 1.49G giving CPU benchmark scores of:

Dhrystone ALU 4193 MPS
Whetstone FPU 2054 MFLOPS

Clock on!

Yeah, it was new about 8~9 months ago when 1.33 ghz was introduced.🙂

Well, I've had the same processor for sometime. If you're trying to overclock, I would advise you against getting the Volcano 5. It's cheap but not really effective (you can find better hsf for a nominal addition to the inexpensive price of a Volcano). Also, to get better performance from your cpu, try raising the fsb as much as you can before raising the multiplier (i.e., 10x145 would be better than 11X133). Your ram, whether sdram or ddr, should go higher than 136 you currently have.
