A couple of recent ISP retardedness threads prompted me to share my experience trying to get Adelphia's HSI for anyone looking for a funny story.

Setup:

I've been living in my apartment for 6 months.
I have no landline (so DSL is out).
I have Cable TV for "free" through the homeowner's association (I pay rent, Landlord pays dues, HOA pays cableco).
I have my own cable modem which is already "online" and awaiting activation.

1st Call to setup service:

They ask for my address, I give it to them. Building #, Apartment #, Street, Zip, etc.

They tell me that address isn't in the system. Are you Building Number (my number + 1)? Cus I have that.

No, pretty damn sure of my building number. This is my address. I already have cable TV through the HOA. My modem is already online. Just give me an account number please and send the bill.

No, can't do that. We need to send a tech out to make sure the location is serviceable and that we can get a line into the building.

Um....no. I already have cable TV. I already have a line. I just want an account number.

So she changes her story and says that the tech has to make sure the lines are setup properly for apartments. Not sure what that means, but I say ok, I figure it will only take a day or two to get someone who isn't retarded at my door and we can get this done. She says it will take 2-5 business days.

5 days go by, nothing happens.

call again, explain everything over again.
I have cable TV, no hookup is needed.
ALL of the buildings in my complex are hooked up, my address is "good".
I am part of a HOA that has an account for ALL the addresses in the complex.

Says tech "usually come in 5-9 business days". Remember, previous person said 2-5. Tries to lookup the address, finds the right building number, but not my apartment #. Now how did that get there since last time? Can't find the HOA name. Talk to a supervisor, tells me that he's very sorry. A tech will be out soon.

But I don't NEED a TECH!

Supervisor says he'll escalate it, I'm first on the priority list. Whatever.

5 more days go by. I call back up, they admit they have no idea what is going on. Don't know when a tech will come. Don't know what to tell me. I ask to talk to a supervisor again. same thing, all over again. No tech needed. Have cable.

If my cable goes out, does it take 2 weeks for a tech to come? He says "its not the same thing".

So we argue for awhile, and he tries to say that I can't get cable unless a tech hooks up the line. FOR THE FIFTH TIME, THE LINE IS ALREADY HOOKED UP.

So he says that I didn't tell him that. I told him that I told the first 3 people and that they put it in the notes on the file. Guess not.

So the supervisor asks the name of the HOA. I tell him (same thing I told the first two people). Oh, here is is. I found it. Here's your account number.

.............

Why couldn't anyone find it before?

Dunno, its right here. Anything else?

No, thanks.

Cliffs:

called Adelphia 3 times, talked to 2 supervisors trying to get HSI. Said address wasn't in system. Tech never came after 2 weeks. Finally supervisor finds my HOA and puts me in manually after I asked 4 people to do it and said they couldn't.

Adelphia just screwed up internet for me (and FrustratedUser) in our town/city here. We're not exactly happy either, since they claimed there wasn't a problem and there clearly was.

 adelphia.

If I had another option where I live, Adelphia would be in my rear view mirror.

I'm one of the unfortunates who have Adelphia as their only local cable provider, and however terrible their customer service is, their product is top notch. Earlier this year I had an issue where I made an automated payment over the tele like I always do. Next month rolls around, and it's still there, but it's long been taken from my bank account. It took no less than 3 calls to the customer service line, 4 trips to the local office (2 of which I had my bank statement for them), and one cable disconnect because I refused to pay anything until they fixed it, all over about a month's time. It was absolutely rediculous.

However, on the plus side, their internet is fast as fvck, and their HD picture quality is outstanding compared to the satellites.

I have to agree with you there, the internet is pretty fast. As soon as I got it up, I ran a speed test and pulled the full 4MB they were advertising.

Right now, I'm on their promo plan ($23.95 for the full speed for 3 months). Then, when it goes to regular price, I'm going to drop down to the low speed one (384k) for $24/month, which is 50% faster than Bellsouth's lowspeed (256K) for the same price. And I don't need a phone line, which is another plus.

I was also thinking about getting one of their HD packages, but I'm afraid to call again....

It's a done deal but will take 2-3 years to get everybody under the Time Warner umbrella.

Adelphia internet costs way too much. We're paying $50 for a 2.5mb down connection, and D/L speeds max out at 350kb/s. If we didn't get "free" cable TV (thanks, Adelphia!), we would've cancelled long ago.

Most servers limit connections of clients to something between 200KB-400KB usually anyway right?

After reading about some of the crap other people have to put up with from their local cable monopolies...I'm just glad my adelphia service doesn't have an unadvertised monthly bandwidth cap, is fast and almost never goes down. Frankly, virtually every company I have to deal with these days has absolutely dogsh|t customer service...and I wouldn't even rank my experiences with adelphia cs in the top 10. At least it ain't comcast...yet.

OMfg I hate them with a passion. How they are allowed this local monopoly bullsh!t is beyond me.

edit: yeah I know they were bought out by TW/Comcast but I have a feeling the service will not improve... Woooo.. a new sticker on the trucks...

Yeah, after reading that other thread, I made sure to ask the tech about a monthly cap. The tech said no, and he seemed like he knew what he was doing (this is not the customer service people, and this is a tech on the phone. The guy who was supposed to come never showed).

Then again, apparently they can add one at any time without any notice.

you would go to adelphia's HQ and then turn around?

you would stick an adelphia logo on your back windshield and/or your rear view mirror?

you would put a modem IN your rear view mirror?

explain

Adelphia internet is out more times than it is up where i am (Fredericksburg Virginia).

I agree that the internet is very fast, and the HD picture quality is good. However, their regular Cable picture quality is pretty bad.

As for their customer service, in my experience they have been able to solve my problems when i called; the only problem was that i had to wait on the phone for hours (Yes HOURS) to talk to one. Also in my experience, they have gotten better in recent years at that.
