Adding Power Switch to External HD

Hi all,

First post in two years! You all were a great resource while I "built" my first PC. Good to be back.

I have a WD 120gig USB 2.0 external hard drive without a power switch. I back up my computer about once a month, and that means crawling under my desk to plug in the WD.

Not that big of a deal, but it seems ridiculous to me that there is no hard wired switch on this thing??? I would like to add a switch on the outside of the case, but I have a question.

I was thinking about adding a Double pole, single throw 12v\5v\1.5A switch in between the card that controls the USB (inside the casing) and the Hard Drive. Will this work? Or will the USB card get cooked?

My knowledge of electronics is limited to one year of high school TV repair, so please keep Pythagoras and Dr. Ohm to a minimum 🙂

OR IS THERE A BETTER SOLUTION?

One more bump, and then I am cutting into this thing 🙂

I will let you all know if it worked.

BTW DONT BUY AN EXTERNAL HARD DRIVE WITHOUT A POWER SWITCH. thank you
