Adding permanent subs to divx/xvid movies

Does anybody know how to do this? I've found a few guides from googling but using those guides I was not able to preserve the sound of the movies that I have. I ask this question because I have the Philips DVP642 (plays divx avis right off CD's/DVD's) and it does not support sub + idx files, so if I can somehow re-encode my videos to permanently attach the subtitles, I could just burn all my Asian movies with subtitles and watch them on my DVD player. Any help appreciated!

I hear those support .SRT subtitles. Try converting the subtitles using SubRip from doom9.org.

edit: Oops, I just re-read you topic... So this doesn't support SRT either?

This player does support srt, but not very well. The subs from srt files just shows up as very thin white text (without the normal black outline that most subs have), so it's very easy for it to blend into the background. Thanks for the suggestion though.

Any step-by-step instructions for using VirtualDub and VOBsub?

I'm not at a Windows PC right now, but basically all you do is install Vdub and VobSub, open your video file, Set processing to full, add the subtitle filter, add the subtitle file, then save as. There might be some guides floating around, but there isn't too much to it.

EDIT: Found a guide.
