Adding more ram to muy super fast P2 @ 450 MHZ pc...

It has a Soyo SY-6VBA-133 Motherboard w/VIA Apollo PRO 133 two chip AGP set. I currently have 128 MB of PC 100 SDRAM and I'd like to add more. Any suggestions besides using my pc as a doorstop?

Here are Crucial's guaranteed-compatible modules for your motherboard: link for Soyo 6VBA-133 If you run Win2000 and just use Office or whatnot, then adding another 128MB will help a lot. If you run WinXP and/or use apps that take more RAM (games, photo editing, etc) then maybe grab a 256MB module to bring it up to 384 total. Hope that helps 🙂

Also any "PC100" from FS/FT forum should work. Cheap PC133 from compusa probably won't work since old mobos can't use the "high density" RAM.

What to use it for? What do you need? linux server, MP3 jukebox, ...?

Thanks!

I actually only have windows 98 (non SE) and only use it for internet / email so I guess 128 more would be plenty.

With what I ahve now it has started going really slowly on certain websites with typing boxes.

You might just have adware, spyware, a virus or trojan slowing you down. A fresh format and reinstall plus norton 2003 would fix that.

256MB is a good place to stop with Win98. If you haven't already done so, you might want to run AdAware 6 or Spybot to ensure that your system isn't infested with spyware, which might explain some of your system's slowness when on the Internet. Also, if it's not all patched-up, head over to Windows Update and load up on the latest patches 😀

A full virus scan using the latest up-to-date virus definitions, installing free ZoneAlarm firewall software and a defragmentation of the hard drive could also be worth your time (you may have to start the computer in Safe Mode to get it to defrag without 50 million interruptions/restarts).

If the time comes when you can afford it, consider upgrading to Windows2000 (as long as you don't need true DOS support for older games or something).

Hey hey, I have dell xps-r450 that I got 5 years ago. Right now it has two 30GB maxtor drive raid 0 (promise fastrak66) and 384MB ram. It is running as a multipurpose server in my home. It is a DC, DNS, WINS, Exchange server (8mailbox, 1 for everyone in the house), OWA, and a lot of other little services likefile & print server, etc etc. I wish I could add more memory in the system because it is currently at max, but other than that it is working great with resonable speed.

Exchange will ALWAYS use all the ram it can get so that's normal. 384 is a little tight but 8 users isn't too bad. I hope your exchange information store is backed (correctly!) up if it's running on a RAID0 array! :Q
