Adding Disk to a RAID5 Array

hi,

i have 3 identical 36GB SCSI Drives placed on a RAID5 array (with a hardware RAID Contoller). All of them were U160 or Ultra160.

Now i like to add another 36GB SCSI this time with a different model of course and its a U320.

All of them are hot swappable,now if i add the U320 SCSI HDD how would it affect my existing array?

I need you advises,

It's best to consult with the responsible support department that makes your HBA.

U320 LVD-SE devices will run at U160 LVD-SE without problem. Unlike IDE, SCSI ANSI specifications will allow you to accomodate different drives into an existing array without timing issues that can result in bus resets and other unwanted anomalies. 🙂

Summary: Check with the manufacturer of your HW RAID controller first. You should not have any problems expanding the capacity of your RAID5 logical drive or adding a hot spare disk.
