I'm using a windows 2000 network running in native mode. MY question is why does the netbios name have to be used when adding computers to a domain. For example, if your domain is greatone.dns2go.com in order to add to domain you must simpley put in greatone and not greatone.dns2go.com.

I'm not quite sure what your question is, but you can in fact type either the netbios name (greatone) or the FQDN (greatone.dns2go.com) when adding Win2k boxes to a Win2k domain.

In this particular case, "greatone" is not, infact, a NetBIOS name. It is a portion of a Fully Qualified Domain Name (FQDN). All 2k clients append names like this.
So if my computer name is "test" and the domain is anything.com, when I enter say, ping test at the command prompt, the computer looks looks to check which domain suffixes have been entered in the TCP/IP properties> Advanced> DNS tab. Generally the domain to which the client is a member is automatically appended.
You can disable this behavior in the same place.
