Adding an additional domain controller. What things can possibly go wrong?

We have 2 servers acting as domain controllers for a single domain, both running Windows 2000 Server. I need to setup a test bed, in order to work on how to upgrade. My IT manager insists that when I setup the test bed, I use actual data from the domain controllers. So what I am going to do is this:

1) Add an additional domain controller to the domain and let it replicate with the other domain controllers.
2) Remove the domain controller by physically removing it from the network. Follow thse steps on the main domain controller to remove all traces of the additional domain controller. http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=216498

The problem I have is that I want to be very sure that when I add an additional domain controller to the domain, there is not effect on the other domain controllers. How can I make sure that things don't go wrong?
