Adding a video card to an mATX board with integrated video.

I recently built a system for a friend based on the Asus A7S-VM Sis 730s motherboard. I am very disappointed in its performance. I've built quite a few systems, and all others have been superb. With this one, there was budget and space constraints, so it was the only way to go. If I buy a relatively inexpensive PCI video card and disable onboard video, would I see a considerable performance increase? To me, it seems like it's a memory issue. The sharing of system memory with the video memory looks like the culprit in causing the degradation of overall performance. Just looking for a suggestion if mine doesn't sound like a logical one. Also, if my belief is true, what would be a good 2d PCI video card compatible with Win2k? Thanks.

well, i did this on an old system that i had. I put a voodoo3 3000 into it. It was definitely better, especially in hardware rendering.
As far as choices...
-voodoo3 is not all that great, but fairly cheap and works good with pci bus.
-The voodoo5 is massive (prolly wont fit in many mATX cases), but not a bad card of all the pci cards you could buy.
-The radeon pci. I'm afraid i dont know too much about it, but it seems tolerable, even though it suffers from some the lack of bandwidth on the pci bus.
-the gf2 mx pci. not bad, but also suffers from the limited bandwidth.

im not sure, but i think that all should work well in win2k. the only question that i have is as to the 3dfx cards, as to how good the drivers are for win2k, because the company went under.

Good luck

I'm definitely looking into doing this, but because of monetary constraints, I will have to look for something relatively inexpensive. Most of the Voodoo cards fit the bill, but I don't want to be left out in the cold with bad, premature drivers for Win2k. Anybody with any other suggestions?
