Adding a 2nd WAP

I have a Netgear ME102 WAP. I can't quite seem to get a perfect placement for it that would cover my entire house + front and back yards. It supports roaming. If I were to splurge and buy a 2nd wap, would I have to configure it exactly like the first, e.g. give it the same wep settings and MAC address filters? Or would the 2nd one just pick it up from the first? Seems like maintenance could get to be a hassle in a setting where you had several waps and wanted the security features on.

Also, there have been some posts here about how roaming doesn't always work as well as it should, i.e. the laptop doesn't always switch to the stronger signal. Would it be smarter to give the 2nd wap a different ssid, so it would be like I had 2 wireless networks, and then switch between them? I suppose I should put the 2 waps on different channels if I do that?

Thanks much. I like Netgear, but its documentation really varies in its quality and extensiveness, and I don't see this topic covered very well.
