Mwuahahaha...welcome...to The Pit of Hardware Angst. There is no escape. You can turn your back, sure; but you will come back...you always do.

:D

I enjoy just testing the stuff out, benchmarking it, comparing notes with others. It's a great hobby...an EXPENSIVE hobby too. :Q

I agree. I love building the systems, tweaking them, and messing with hardware. Once I've got them built, it's maybe a week until I want to do something new. :p

Currently I'm trying to build a completely fanless system ... based around the Athlon XP. :Q

Yup. It got me today. MichaelD's SCSI quest got me. I just bought 4 10,000 rpm 5.2 ms access SCSi drives, and am getting a raid 5 controller for them. should be setup by next weekend.

Ho-lee-crap!! :Q DAAAANG that's gonna ROCK.

What SCSI RAID adapter are you getting? I have held off b/c I can't seem to get a definite answer on exactly WHICH RAID cards will work in a standard 32-bit, 33MHz PCI slot. :(

I'd love to stripe mine. *sigh* I'd easily break the 110Mb/s mark w/two of the Fuji MAS drives.

Here's just a single drive by itself.

They are fast. For what they cost, they'd better be.

I have acrylic ordered now, I'm waiting on it.

Given that you're even considering a Prescott, I'm going to go ahead and say that your budget is probably about twenty times mine. ;)

I bought my Athlon64 3200+ back in Nov, returned it today and got the 3400+ for no extra charge.

That paired with your Athlon64 will make everyone hate you. Let's see some benchmarks! :D

:D Bwuahahah!! That just cracked me up. Nice one. :D

I had XXXdollars. I said "SCSI or A64?" Knowing what I do about the alleged features of the upcoming NF3250, and being that I had already decided to wait for said chipset and possbily the Socket 939 A64's, I said:

Screw it. SCSI time.

:D

I am shopping EBay for a hardware SCSI RAID controller that is compatible with regular 32-bit, 33MHz PCI slots. So, that would be either a 32-bit, 33MHz card or a PCI-X card. There are some 64-bit cards that are NOT marketed as PCI-X that will work, but I'm not smart enough on SCSI to find them. If anyone wants to help me out with that I'd appreciate it. :)

I'm on a quest to find out exactly what happens when you oversaturate the PCI bus.

MichaelD, now if the one I just got doesn;t work, then don't outbid me on the one I am going for next !!!! Please !! Anyway, I think I screwed up on the controller I just got. 128 meg cache Intel sounded great figuring it would be compatable, but maybe not, and I think I need a backup card.....

Anyway, isn't this fun !!!! Blowing money we don't really have (or shouldn't spend) on crap we don't need (but want) ????

OK, I'm an addict......

Oh boy, I feel like I need a 12-step program for hardware. I can relate. I keep creating these perfectly logical scenarios of how I will wait until x & y, but then the seduction of some "new" sucks me in and I end up with some new hardware and a now defunct plan.

Fortunately for me, hardware is still less expensive than my primary "enthusiast" hobbies of skiing and cycling. But with all the changes coming this year and my hardware "I want it" impatience, that could change.

Egads! I'm going to install multiple versions of Linux this week to see which I like the best. Maybe that will help me survive another week until x & y. Probably not.
