I just got a second stick of 512MB pc2700. I pop it in, connect the new optical drive. Boot up, the screen is scrambled and stuff so then I ask the store where I bought the stuff, and they said to take the mobo battery out for a bit to clear the CMOS.

I do, and this time the POST isn't scrambled. But right when I go to the WinXP logo screen, the thing reboots. After the next POST, it says there was a Hardware Monitor problem, and then it tells me to go to the BIOS and check that. The RPMs on my chassis fans are red. I chose to ignore that cause my temps are still 42 degrees celcius...

I boot up again, still reboots at the XP logo screen.

Asus p4pe, 2.4GHz p4 533fsb, ati radeon 9500 pro, 512mb generic pc2700, and the added Kingston value ram 512mb pc2700

Ok, first of all, try bumping your memory voltage to 2.6 volts if it isn't there already (see page 4-19 of the Asus P4PE manual, it's DDR Reference Voltage). If it's at 2.6V, consider trying 2.7V.

Also, what brand, model and wattage of power supply do you have? It's possible that your power supply is having difficulty with the added load of the second memory module and the new drive.

Besides that, check to make sure that no two drives are on the same cable with the same master/slave setting. For instance, if you added the new optical drive onto the same IDE cable as the old one, set one of them as Master and the other as Slave so they don't both try to be Master, or both try to be Slave.

Good luck and welcome to the Forums :)

I have a Antec 400w SmartPower PSU. The DDR voltage was on AUTO, so I tried changing to 2.6V and it got furthur into the log in process, I was able to see the different accounts, but then it rebooted. I tried 2.7 and 2.5 but they both rebooted early like before.

I'm going to try having the Kingston RAM in the first slot, and having the generic brand out or in the second slot.
