I have just installed a second NIC and reinstalled Windows Millenium from scratch.

NIC #1 goes to cable modem and NIC #2 goes to laptop via crossed cable (no need for hub yet). Both NICS are 3Comm, OEM latest model. I also have a old ISDN PnP ISA board (Siemens I-Surf, working fine, as a backup for when the cable is down).

The problem is that Millenium used to startup very fast, now it takes forever. I have DHCP on the cable modem NIC, fixed IP on the other.

WINS resolution is disabled. DNS is also disabled (the DHCP supplies that).

I have also unchecked the boxes in the bindings tab for the cable modem NIC - Client for Microsoft Networks and file and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks, since I do not wish to share these over the net...

I think everything is ok, but during startup the process seems to stop, tha cable modem PC-link led flashes, then disk activity, then stop again, then finally windows comes to life.

I do not know why, but the "Windows Network Login" windows does not appear anymore (yesterday it did...)

I am about to remove both NIC devices in control panel/system and let windows redetect the hardware again...

the problem is that your trying to do it with Win Me.
Sure it should work, but I've never done it with Me before, why dont you try 2000 or linux? or how about just get a router?
just a thought
to be honest, I know win Me has the capabilities, but I've never actually seen anyone do it before.
