Bush Ignores Science

Well, well, we just had bunch of diplomats the other days spoken out against Bush's foreign policy. Now we have 48 Nobel Prize winners speaking out against Bush's policy on scientific research.

Excerpts from the open letter:

"The prosperity, health, environment, and security of Americans depend on Presidential leadership to sustain our vibrant science and technology; to encourage education at home and attract talented scientists and engineers from abroad; and to nurture a business environment that transforms new knowledge into new opportunities for creating quality jobs and reaching shared goals.

"President Bush and his administration are compromising our future on each of these counts. By reducing funding for scientific research, they are undermining the foundation of America's future. By setting unwarranted restrictions on stem cell research, they are impeding medical advances. By employing inappropriate immigration practices, they are turning critical scientific talent away from our shores. And by ignoring scientific consensus on critical issues such as global warming, they are threatening the earth's future. Unlike previous administrations, Republican and Democratic alike, the Bush administration has ignored unbiased scientific advice in the policy-making that is so important to our collective welfare. "

i just read this article on Google. I find it sick that my friend's sister who is paralyzed from the waist down at age 13 might have to remain that way because we have some hillbilly Jesus freak in the White House, or that so many deseases which may stand a good chance of being cured might never be. Religious ideology preventing legitimate scientific advancement is criminal IMHO.

Bush simply believes in the Lysenko approach to science. Nothing to it really.

And don't forget the bunch of law experts speaking out against Bush's twisting of US law.

Even Nancy Reagan wanted the Bush administration to support stem cell research. Naturally she got the cold shoulder.

Must maintain Narrow focus..the leader is infallible...the leader infallibe.

What the hell's that got to do the letter Train.Did you even RTFA.

The masses don't care that scientific and technological progress is being stifled and that americas edge as the sci/tech leader is waning but who gives a sh!t.The polls say people don't care so fvck science.

Also the whole point of the article is that bush approach to research is stifling the economy.

The polls say people don't care so fvck science.

And screw thinking for yourself too I take it? It takes a poll from others for you to base your opinion on?

If you lived in a time where everything was in the shithole because generations of humans that lived before you didn't care I think it would be an issue for you.

This reminded me of an impromptu political/humor poll I did on my college campus a few weeks ago (2 questions):

Who's funnier?
1) Adam Sandler
2) Monty Python

Who's getting your vote?
1) Bush
2) Kerry

of the 364 respondents, 82% of those who thought Adam sandler was funnier plan to vote for Bush.

76% of those who voted Monty Python funnier plan to vote for Kerry.

Does this have any significance? Probably not. But in this increasingly divergent post, I thought it seemed fitting.

"Only John Kerry would declare the country to be in scientific decline on a day when the country's first privately funded space trip is successfully completed," said Bush campaign spokesman Steve Schmidt.

Stem cells unlikely Alzheimer's therapy

But given the lack of any serious suggestion that stem cells themselves have practical potential to treat Alzheimer's, the Reagan-inspired tidal wave of enthusiasm stands as an example of how easily a modest line of scientific inquiry can grow in the public mind to mythological proportions.

It is a distortion that some admit is not being aggressively corrected by scientists.

"To start with, people need a fairy tale," said Ronald McKay, a stem cell researcher at the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke in Bethesda, Md. "Maybe that's unfair, but they need a story line that's relatively simple to understand."

Steve Schmidt is a little confused. John Kerry didn't declared the country to be in scientific decline, 48 Nobel prize winners did.

And this is not about stem cell being the absolute cure for Alzheimer, it may or may not be. This is about going backward to the middle age when the authority restrict scientific studies because of religious belief.

I have read another report that suggested stem cell research may benefit Alzheimer's in the future but that it is more prudent to work on other treatments that are far more more advanced at this time. This is, in part, because of the limited funding available. The idea is to put the money where it will produce the fastest results.

I do agree that Bush only seems to view science as a political tool. He has consistantly rolled back or obstucted envirenrmental and chemical exposure rules and regulations. He justifies this by claiming that such rules were implimented because "bad science" was used to determine what actions should be taken. His anti-stem cell stance is simply pandering to to the fundamentalists; who are some of his most ardent supporters.

This is an issue on which I sharply disagree with Bush. He's been very close-minded about stem cell research -- the abortion issue notwithstanding, and about alternative fuel sources. I'm not a tree hugger either, but his relaxing of environmental standards has made me take notice as well. His policies regarding science have been less than impressive in my opinion.

This is Bush pandering to his Evangelist/Fundie base and, in turn, taking this country off of the crest of scientific pioneering. South Korea is pushing ahead of us with research in this field. Before long, people will be heading abroad for stem cell-based regenerative care and our medical technology will be seen as second-class.

I'm not so sure I agree with the man either on this topic, but you know what? At least he made a decision based upon what he thought was right in terms of LIFE and its definition, i.e., when it starts.

You can't fault the man for that. Then again, the people with chips on their shoulders can bash him for just about anything.

I'm a conservative, and I have never bashed Clinton the way you all Bash the current president It's almost, well, French, or European of you and your thoughts. Gore, well, remember, he did invent the internet... LOL.

Lighten up a bit, and perhaps these conversation might go somewhere. If this is the bickering that goes on in congress, well, I can see why nothing gets done.
