What did you do before it started doing this? Perhaps you can try rolling back using System Restore if some files got corrupted. Do a virus scan and spyware scan first, though.

I have AVG anti virus for virus protection and I have no firewall solution because I'm swapping files between computers alot. I don't remember when this started up. I did do a virus and spyware scan and nothing showed up. I don't use java all that much anyways though thanks daniel.

You can share files without turning off the firewall. Just open up the ports you need. You can do this even with the built in firewall in XP.

Can I suggest that you slap a 30-day trial of Kaspersky on there: http://www.kaspersky.com/trials If you don't like it, or just don't want to pay for it, you can go back to AVG after it runs out, but it has 2 to 3 times the detection rate of AVG on some types of threats, if you take a look at the Feb 2005 results posted at www.av-comparatives.org.

Do you at least have a router to keep the worms and hackers out from the Internet, since you have no firewall software?

LOL... you may not, but the exploits will be happy to see your out-of-date Java RTE there.

Did you install any programs recently that might be running in the background? That looks like some kind of memory leak or corruption. Back when GetRight was in its infancy, and I was still using Win98SE, it would cause graphic corruption in a variety of programs. Lots of poorly-written freeware programs also have that problem (emphasis on the "poorly-written" part; I've got nothing against freeware/free software).

I did the virus scan took care of one virus that AVG didn't find - however, I still have the strange blackness. I'm not using any poorly coded freeware. Only thing I have is maybe Flashget?
