"add or remove programs" problem

Hello,
I'm having a nuisance problem with "add or remove programs".
I get vertical stripes appearing in the list, and that makes the list MUCH longer to scroll down.

I found these pages showing similar problems:

It doesn't appear after the same program if you change the "sort".

I tried running X-Setup Pro & got rid of a couple duplicate entries but that didn't help.

running WindowsXP-Pro SP2

This may help:

This is generally due to the DisplayIcon having a negative number. From here you can either remove the negative number or remove the last application listed: Start/Run/Regedit: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\{}

If you look at each of these registry entries, you'll see that some of them include a "DisplayIcon" item. Scan all of them, find the one ending in a negative number and remove the number.

I tried 🙁

I do computer repair and 90% of the time I find my answer to bizarre problems like these on Google, but sometimes you need to have some patience.

Spend an hour googling with variations of the description of the problem (white area, stripes, etc.). Don't just Google the web but also Google newsgroups - they're usually a treasure trove of information.

Also some VERY patient searches in Microsoft's Knowledgebase might pay off. Just changing the phrasing of the search words or the order often brings up very different results. There's a lot of info in the MS KB it's just hard to find what you need.

Another shot in the dark: I THINK (not sure) that the TweakUI Power Toy used to have a fix for corruption of the "Add/Remove Wizard" in it's repair tab. Might want to install it and see.

Good luck...
