Today I called back on a job, and actually spoke to the hiring individual for the first time in 2 months. I wish I hadn't -- at least I'd have a little bit of hope still.

Thanks to a friend here on the boards I found an excellent job opportunity back in January. (BTW Chris, I really appreciate it, it gave me something to look forward to) Things went well, and I got a phone interview not long afterwards, which was initially pitched as a formality. Upon conclusion of the phone interview I was told "I'm satisfied, for all I'm concerned you have the job - we just need to go through the formalities".

About a month later I drove 10 hours for an in-person interview and met with 4 people, which the hiring individual reiterated that I have the job already. They needed to get an idea on an offer and such.

About a month or so ago I get an email requesting references, which I sent along. And this is where my tale dies.

I know all of the references I provided would have given positive words - I made sure that they would be appropriate references in leaving those respective companies. However, the one thing that I could not guarantee is that those references are still with their respective companies. And, aparently they are not.

My phone call today, after being told several times that I already have the position, ended up with "None of your references responded back to us, and having references is a requirement of employment". One of the references happens to be my current boss - who would have told me if anyone requested a reference from him (which last I asked he said noone has).

Here's to making $5.65/hr for the rest of my life. <-- I can't afford that one, so if someone can pick up the tab for me, I'd appreciate it.

Update - Well, after a day or so of cooling off from shock and being pissed, I decided to do a little digging. I called each of my references, and spoke with 2 and left a voicemail with 1. The two that I have spoken with indicated that noone has attempted to contact them for a reference and/or employment verification. I'm fairly certain the 3rd will also cooborate as well.

So I fired off an email today highlighting this point. We'll see what becomes of it. I don't expect to get the job now, but I would like an explaination.

I think I just got fvcked over bigtime. I am getting so sick of this job hunting sh!t especially since I've gotten jacked 4 times now on jobs I should have had by now.

You should have checked them out yourself before using them as a reference, however if a company is that interested in somebody and doesn't at least give you a chance to provide more references I think that is pretty lame.

You should have pointed out that your Boss had not been contacted yet.

I was going to mention that, but I couldn't pick my jaw up off the floor fast enough.

Bump with update - I just fired off an email stating that and requesting an explaination.

$5.65/hour goes a lot farther in many places in the US than $8/hour does in CA.

I wouldnt expect to get to far.

they may habe been trying to be nice by putting it like that. They may have found someone who is a better fit for the job.

Calling and pointing it out may not help you out at all.

And you wonder why the state doesn't have a viable budget. $8 an hour minimum is nuts.
