Add eSata?

If the MB doesn't have an eSata port on the back, is there an addon card that will supply an eSata port by connecting to an available internal Sata connector? Thanks.

IDK if that slot plate has a SATA plug or an eSATA plug. The description sounds like it's a regular SATA plug.

eSATA and SATA plugs are slightly different and not interchangeable.
I had the same doubts, but it supposedly "allows you to use external Serial ATA devices", and I've not heard of such that use the internal SATA plug (though I may be ignorant). Anyway, even if not this particular product, there are others which are cheaper than a fully-fledged controller and don't require a specific expansion slot.

If it doesn't say it includes an eSATA plug, I assume it's a SATA plug.

I've gotten those exact same slot covers with MBs and they have a regular SATA plug.

The eSATA add on slot covers are at the command of the MB SATA controller. If the controller doesn't have AHCI enabled you lose one of the major conveniences of eSATA, the hot-swap feature.

You can put 50 cents into a slot cover or 20.00 into an eSATA cheapo controller card and more often than not, users don't know there will be a difference.

So it sounds like if I just enable AHCI I can use the slot cover with only a plug attached and have the hot swap feature? It's not clear what the controller card provides that wouldn't be provided by that setup.

My Vantec external enclosure came with a little bracket that converts a SATA plug to an eSATA port.

I'm sure you can get them.

Basically. Technically eSATA incorporates a few other things but the hot swap feature can be enabled on SATA ports also. You should be good to go by enabling AHCI.

I'm sure the controller incorporates everything you need for true eSATA.

I know you can get them. I'm just not sure about the one in the link.

I'm sure I'm not the only person who needed and bought a SATA to eSATA conversion cable because a discription was misleading or incomplete.

OR am I............

PS. How about this bracket?

I was actually looking at this the other day (the motherboard backplates) and was wondering if there is an external powerbrick/plug that you can buy to use for sata HDs?

so I could use an SATA HD without an enclosure?

How about this bracket? Power your drive with internal power.
