Over the past year I have gotten a huge problem remembering what I've read.. I'll read a paragraph and have no flipping clue what I just read.

Went to the dr. (haven't been in... 8 years..) and he prescribed be strattera... said to give it a couple weeks and if it doesn't work to come back. hm

EDIT:

I'm 20, I eat healthy, am healthy, and excersize. My problem is not diet, the way I was raised, etc. and it is a real problem.

EDIT:

okay it's been about two months. I took 60mg of strattera once a day for a month. it worked really well 80% of the time and made me worse than i was before i started taking it the other 20% of the time. also I got headaches once or twice, and had trouble sleeping sometimes. Wierdest of all.. I started 'pre-cumming'... no pre ejaculating... but seminal fluid would come out a min or two before climax. my g/f liked it.. and it took me FOREVER to orgasm which got frustrating.

Dr decided to go w/ 40mg twice a day. sexual side effects stopped, headaches stopped. still didn't work 20-25% of the time and sleep problems.

Today Dr decided to try ritalin sr (extended 8 hour release 20mg). I took one an hour ago and don't feel any different. we'll see.

I have it. Without meds I'm so damn scatterbrained, but with them I'm... well, still scatterbrained, but not as much.

If the strattera works for you without side effects that's fairly indicative you have ADD. If you want I can go through a bunch of other stuff that seems to happen a lot with people with ADD. Example: when you drink something with caffeine, does it make you tired for a little bit before it perks you up?

I have something like it, the psychologist called it "Visual Learning Disorder with ADHD" or something to that effect. It explains so much.....

Maybe you have a short-term memory problem. Are you taking any other meds or smoking dope?

No, ADHD is a 90% cop out for parents who don't know how to take an interest in raising their kid.

The problem with diagnosing ADHD/ADD is that the person who has the symptoms is the only person who can detect them, since the most indicative ones are related to thought patterns, concentration, etc. Try asking an 8 year old to describe their thought patterns sometime; it's funny.

Its wierd, I can sit stil lfor hours when I'm playing video games, but put me in school, throw information at me and ask me to remember things and you can forget it. I guess it has something to do with the fact that video games are excellent stimulation and they keep me occupied.

Lots of people get that, but it isn't necessarily ADD. Parents on the other hand like to immediately jump to the conclusion that it must be ADD, since little Johnny is a perfect angel and really means well and it must be something else causing these problems, not the 4 Mountain Dews he drinks every day or the sugar-loaded pre-processed crap you pack him for lunch or the fact that you never spend any f%$#ing time with him. It must be ADD, it's just got to be.

If you think you have ADD, try exhausting all the other possible causes first. Protein deficiency, lack of exercise, even thyroid problems can all cause ADD symptoms.

You tell me if it works or not.

Add/ADHD is not real.

Cut the sugar intake, cut the caffeine, cut the processed foods (many turn into sugar when digested) and start eating healthier foods and your 'ADD' will go away.

Then let me ask you this question: if ADD isn't real, how come we have medications which are proven to treat it? What exactly are they treating then?

Your issue isn't with the disease, it's with the cause.

While I think it's a legitimate disorder, I think docs are way too quick to diagnose the kid and give him drugs because the kid just won't pay attention. Some parents just need to work harder on teaching their children discipline, but docs don't care. They seem to hand out R like it's freakin candy or something.

Uh... became drug companies are making billions of dollars off of treating the 'disease'? Sure the drugs work. You can take Vicodin for a headache and it will work. Doesn't mean you're not going about the problem the wrong way.

My point exactly, though I contend a lot of it is also on the parents, especially the ones who say "my kid has ADD" and then turn around and give said kid a Coke. Brilliant. I wonder why little Billy is bouncing off the walls.

There's also a lot of miscommunication between individual specialists in the medical field. Like I mentioned, a lot of different things can cause ADD symptoms. My little brother suffered from both a protein deficiency and a thyroid disorder which caused his ADD symptoms. It wasn't that our doctor didn't want to help or find a solution besides medication -- especially after none of the medication he tried worked -- it was that he had no clue that a protein deficiency or a thyroid condition could cause ADD symptoms. It was only by chance that my mom happened to mention the ADD problem to the Endocrinologist (after discovering his protein deficiency) that the doc said, "oh yeah, that should clear up once he starts taking more protein. Didn't you know that?"

So to conclude: ADD is really hard to diagnose right now.
