Add a 2nd CPU? Maybe replace both?

I have three (well, two, one's on loan) Gateway 6400 servers and a 7400 server. They support dual CPUs and they each have one PIII-933 right now (they have the 133MHz FSB). If I add a 2nd cpu does it need to be the same speed or can I add a faster one (and would that do any good over a 2nd at the same speed)?

Based on experience, I'd get another cpu that's both the same speed AND as close to the 1st cpu's "stepping" as possible. 😉

Same....also remember you're going to need NT/2K/XP (assuming you're going the Windoze path).....9x won't cut it.

And... if you are using Linux, don't you need to reinstall? Or at least recompile some of the kernels? Could be wrong there...

Thanks, folks.

The machine's running W2K Adv. Server so that should do fine afa OS is concerned.

Seems newegg has a decent price on them. $119 for a PIII-933 FCPGA. Much cheaper than building a new PC and a great way to add more WUs!! 😀😀😀

Wow! That IS cheap....

For intel.... 😛

BTW, with linux, you only need to get the SMP kernel sources, compile them on the machine, and then boot up on the new kernel. 🙂

And conjur - it may or may not be as easy as you think with 2K AS, which is what I'm running on my dual Xeon. I remember reading something about this awhile ago but you may literally need to reinstall in order for 2K to get the SMP NT kernel loaded correctly.... 🙁
But reinstalling and windoze always go hand in hand anyway.... 😛

NT4 had the uptomp util that would change the HAL to support multiple processors, 2K has a way to do it (damn, I think I got this question wrong on the exam 🙂) but I can't remember what it's called.
