Add 40mm fan to a Zalman ZM-NB32J

I replaced the stock POS chipset cooler on my K8N Neo2 Platinum with a ZM-NB32J (a ZM-NB47J won't fit due to some tall capacitors on my AGP 6600 GT), and I'd like to stick this 40mm Sunon Magnetic Levitation fan on the side (the ZM-NB32J gets a little toasty, so much so that I have to keep HTT at 3x240=720MHz or the heatsink will burn my hand to the touch). However, I'm kind of at a loss on how I should mount the fan. I'm thinking double sided thermal adhesive tape, but I'm not sure if there would be enough contact surface area on the heatsink's side. I think fan screws are out of the question since the fins are too narrow. Thus, does anyone have any other suggestions? I'd ideally like some sort of retention clip similar to those that come with larger heatpipe heatsinks like the Scythe Ninja or the XP-120, but I haven't been able to find one for sale by itself (let alone one small enough for a 40mm fan). Anyway, any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I can think of two possibilities: 1) could get the Zalman fan bracket (60mm, 80mm, or 90mm) and aim it at the NB or : 2) maybe get some long screws like the ones on this>http://www.sidewindercomputers.com/swmcchco.html and mod 4 holes in the NB32J base in the 4 corners, thread (tap) them and screw away. You will need to get an exact length of the screw so it doesn't protrude too far out the bottem of the base, although it can a little bit. Looks like it could work since the base of the NB32J has those recessed sides.

Thanks, but I'd have to mount the fan on the side, not the top, because the bare heatsink barely misses the tall capacitors on my 6600 GT. I had considered the Zalman FB123 bracket, but I want to avoid that since my case is somewhat crammed.

look at the a8n-e motherboard thread...it's 20 pages long but somebody did the blue zalman hs+40mm fan on the side mod.

ok srry missed that...the Zalman bracket an option? How about some Aluminum decking screws? They have a large, wide thread (which would bend some HS fins undoubtedly) but have a small diameter non-thread near the head. I would think they would grab the HS prongs plenty to hold your fan on. That fan spins at 8200rpm wow! I've been looking for an adaptor/bracket of some sort to suit your need, but have not come up with anything yet. Could you use zipties? http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/Amaroque/Chipset.jpg

Thanks, it took me 15 minutes to sort through the A8N-E thread for that same pic! Anyway, now that I think about it, 27.5 dB @ 8200rpm doesn't sound too great, although the rated airflow is what appeals to me. I was also thinking of this 40mm Papst fan, but damn $17 and only 3.5 CFM, to add?

I thought about zipties, too. However, I'm just afraid they won't withstand the heat, not to mention that I'm doubtful about whether they'll securely hold the fan (without it vibrating and creating more noise). I also just looked inside my case, and I don't know if the Zalman bracket will even fit with my sound card and graphics card in the way.

Anyway, once I settle on a 40mm fan, I think I can find some adequate screws to mount the fan similar to how the guy with the A8N-E did. I'll probably just take the heatsink with me to a hardware store and find a good fit.

Thats a good idea. That papst at 3.5 cfm lol....like whats the use...I guess 3.5 is better than 0, but by how much? I'd go with the fan you picked and maybe put it on a controller, unless the noise is of no concern to you. I reply to people thinking they have the same ears as me. I'm too obsessed w/ noise. GLuck with the mod.
