You can try using msconfig to disable suspect startup items, but it may be compromised also. I found Startup Control Panel at http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml to be more effective if that's the case. Once you keep the malware that's crashing Adaware from starting, that gives you a starting point. Some other particular programs that may help you in this case are CWS shredder, BHO demon, and MS anti-spyware. Malware that can crash Adaware will often break your internet connection upon removal , so have the fix (Lspfix for win98 or winsockxpfix for xp) available.
