I am thinking about buying one of these, stick it in PCIe x16 slot, hook up a SCSI HDD for the OS and 7 SATA 3.0 HDDs for storage (RAID 5 with hotspare). Anybody use this card before? Any suggestions or negative comments?

What's it cost, like $800-900 ? Seems like major overkill if it is for a home PC. And RAID 5 only protects against hardware-related data loss.

For a low-grade business server, could be a pretty kickass setup. For home, way overkill. You can get SATA hardware-RAID5 controllers for a quarter of the price, and the disks don't cost nearly as much.

OVERKILL? :Q Someone mentions overkill in a tech forum where overclocking, water-cooling, and phase-change cooling rule the roost?

Yes, I dropped $1,015 plus change for it...BUT, I have 2 RAID controller cards in one...SCSI and SATA. In addition, I bought the "kit" so a Maxtor SAS HDD is included.

The Promise 8350 sucks and the Areca 1210 is almost as much as the Adaptec 4805, hence my decision to go with the Adaptec. Plus, isn't Adaptec super reliable?

Phase change is far from mainstream.
Water is still uncommon.
What are you using it for?

Nice comment...with absolutely NOTHING to back it up with. You have one of these cards? Have you tested one of these cards? If you have nothing but unsupported statements, stay off my thread.

I am using it for a NAS server... I have had my eye on the Areca 1210 for awhile, but with the Adaptec 4805, it gives me the option of using SCSI. While in most instances seek time (strong point of SCSI) is not an issue, it is quite important for an OS. Yes, it is probably super overkill (ooohh, i used the naughty word), but it will be fun to test it out. It's kind of like having a 12-inch d!ck...you can't really use it, but damn is it mighty fine to be proud of and show off...

Nice comeback, why don't you search 2cpu.com and storagereview.com and other places where people have experience with real storage hardware and they'll tell you that Adaptec is slow, but yes compatible. They have a track record that isn't going to change soon. The statement has much support, too bad you will paid way too much money for "performance" that isn't there. Anyone looking for a "performance" storage solution looks elsewhere. Ask any knowledgeable, experienced admin.

I still think I like Adaptec much better...I can use the external SAS connector to do backups to an external HDD.

The LSi product will have better support and definitely better performance than the Adaptec one.

Strong statements. Who said Adaptec was slow? Someone who uses HDTach or ATTO to benchmark a RAID array? Are you that much of a n00b that you don't know RAID arrays cannot be realistically benchmarked? Oh, sorry, you ARE that n00b that believes whatever people write. Back up your statements with linked facts or get off my thread.

Folks that know obviously a LOT more about storage than you do or ever will have plenty of proof and experience to back this up. And no they do not use the useless programs you mentioned beforehand. This thread is NOT yours but you insist on trolling like it's your domain. Get real and get out and do some research for goodness sakes!

I created the thread...I think I am entitled to guide it...but since you seem to be determined to hijack it, be my guest. So far you have provided absolutely no data to prove Adaptec provides less than desirable hardware. Are you going to provide some useful information or not?

Now, for the most part, it's fairly even. Adaptec wins one round, LSI wins the other. On this particular page though, look at the bottom graph, showing data transfer performance - the Adaptec controller is half the speed of the LSI.

If you look further in the article, Adaptec is slower in all the test with RAID 1+0 / 0+1....but everywhere else is seems to dominate. I would say this is nothing but a driver issue...

In addition, this information is nearly 3 years old!!!!! Three years ago, Intel SMOKED AMD...yet is sucking hind tit today.

Can anyone provide any useful info?
