Adaptec Firewire or USB 2.0 PCI card for $9.99

Here's more info on the firewire card. The Adaptec web site link-- http://www.adaptec.com
The card is 32 bit & 33 MHZ. The card supports 30 frames/sec.
The User Guide does not specify the card's chipset. [Be aware that not all chips work reliably with iPods. Adaptec uses Nec's, TI, etc. If it's a Texas Instruments, the card's highly compatible.
To run an iPod the card must be Windows Hardware Quality Labs (WHQL) certified & this exact model is not listed at http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/hcl/search.mspx/]
Adaptec provides a knowledgebase. You can get tech support by registering. The card is a current model, not a retired one. No DV software is included in the package.
A key drawback of the card is that there's no way to provide extra power from the power supply to the card, so the 4300 may not support devices which draw all their power from the PCI bus.

I cruised the Apple forums & found a couple of reports that The Adaptec FireConnect 4300 works with various models of iPods! However, it must be *charged*. I imagine that goes for Video Cams also.
Forum members say Apple's iPod hardware compatibility list is old & that's why the FConnect 4300 is not on the approved list. Apple sells a Belkin model for Windows users on their online store for ~$40, so the CompUSA model is a far better deal.
On the Adaptec knowledgbase forums I found 1 report that the iPod connected alright but transfer rates were very slow. The "fix" was to adjust settings in MusicMatch.

One of the causes for the slow transfer rate may be due to specific settings in MusicMatch Jukebox. One of the featured supported by Musicmatch Jukebox is called ?Volume Leveling.? This ensures that all the audio tracks transferred to your MP3 player have a consistent volume and requires additional processing. This additional processing may cause a slowdown in the speed at which files are downloaded to the MP3 player. To ensure that the slow transfer rate is not caused by this setting, please disable Volume Leveling and note if the transfer rate increases. Please refer to Musicmatch user documentation for advanced Jukebox functionality.

I got a usb card on black friday same deal to free up the 2 mb usb's for a battery backup and mouse and the card for sure has a NEC chipset and works great. $9.99 AR is good in my book and I feel safer than using a cheep plastic hub hanging from the back of the case.
