Here is the scoop, I know of three systems total now that have very simular problems with Win2k and Plextor burners/roms. Two of the systems are running Adaptec cards, one is a company I can't remember, but it's an LSI chipset. If you try to connect an external device to the card, all the scsi components on the chain start freaking out. In my case, both my disc and on/busy lites start flickering, I can't copy anything to the burner, I can't read from the burner, and windows will eventually come to a crawl. I have my last internal device terminated, and this will happen even if you only connect the cable to the external connector. The systems all have Plextor components and Win2k in common. Myself, I use a Adaptec 2930u2w with id's of 0 and 1 for my ibm drives, 3 for the external HP5se scanner, 4 for the internal Zip, 5 for the Plextor 121032Tsi, and 6 for the Plextor Ultra40. My scanner is actively terminated and the Plextor 40 is via jumper. The other systems have simular setups and the results across all three systems are almost identical.

A question that can't be answered. I was hoping for a little more then that from Anandtech.

Dissapointed.

I will figure it out eventually......patience is a virtural thing

Are you running the latest version of the Adaptec BIOS? It has a little diagnostic code built into it to help with termination problems.

I assume the Adaptec bios setup program (control-A) recognizes everything?

I assume things don't freak out until after W2K is loaded? Is all well if booted to DOS (I know most of the devices will not be usable)?

You've hinted at this, but if you remove one SCSI device at a time, does any one device being removed relieve the problem? If not, work the other way: Remove at many as you can and add them back, one at a time.

Gotta think about this...

Enable termination on the last internal device and last external device. Set host adapter termination to off/disabled.
