This deal was first posted several months ago. Now it's back:

$115
- 20% off Dell branded peripherals ($23)
---------------------------------------------------------------
= $92 shipped

product info

Tech specs

This will go great together with one of the 760MPX dual Athlon boards (eg. Asus A7M266-D) IMHO, making use of the 64-bit PCI slot.

If you're looking for a 15000rpm SCSI drive to go with the card, Dell Home has the Fujitsu 18GB MAM3184MP Internal SCSI 68pin 15000rpm hard drive for $223 - 10% off = $200.

IDE drives spin @ 7200rpm (at the most), which allows them the larger capacity for the same price. SCSI drives spin @ 15,000 (at the most), which means a smaller capacity, but much more speed. For your OS & apps you never really need more than 10GB, but need a lot of speed, this is where SCSI shines. For archiving, mp3's, ect. you will need a lot of space, but not as much speed, this is where IDE shines. SCSI drives typically come with a 5 year warranty as well, opposed to the standard 1 or 3 year IDE warranty.

It seems the 29160N has only 32 bit PCI though.

Unless you are building a Server, I don't think a lot of desktop motherboards have 64bit slot. Anyway, 32bit PCI will not be the limited factor until you raid some 15k rpm drives.

I was the original poster of this a few months back. I remember I almost sh!t my pants when I found these when looking for something to use coupons/discounts on :)

The 29160LP is 64-bit but Low Profile, and you do NOT get the full-size expansion slot bracket...you will either have to remove it or fabricate one from a blank. A dremel would come in handy here. Note Dell does not oficially support the internal connector on this card as it is meant for external drives on their low profile servers. However the internal connector worked just fine for me and for others.

The card zzzz posted is in fact a 29160N. I had a long phone call with Dell where they confirmed this, and the 29160N is what they shipped me. The 29160N is 32-bit, but better than the 19160 which IMHO you should avoid.

I would bet the 39160 card for $199 is an Adaptec 39160 as well.

Yes Dell has the killer deals for SCSI, believe it or not. I got a Fujitsu 18GB 10k drive WITH a terminated cable for under $130 with coupon and discounts. Dell advertised it as 2MB cache but it was a MAN3184MP with 8MB :)

Hey guys I have a raid 0 setup with 2 maxtor 7200rpm ide's. Performance is good, but it's not what I was expecting vs a single 7200 drive.

What type of performance boost would I see with the scsi and 15,000rpm fujitsu drive ??

Would it be worth the money to upgrade ?

I can attest this since I benefitted from XeonTux's original post :)

My 29160LP and Fujitsu MAN3184MP has been working flawlessly and has made my system nice and fast ;)

I'd recommend this deal to people who don't mind paying a premium for performance. Overall my system feels a lot more "zippy" (faster seek times, faster swap file). However, the majority of people won't notice much of a difference and wouldn't be able to justify the cost.

Most people would be better off buying the WD special edition HD to increase their had drive performance instead of buying one of these cards and a scsi HD. But if you are looking for a u160 card anyway, these are great deals.

Sweet deal. I just started to do DVD authoring and am currently using an Ultra160 setup. Egay sometimes has 73GB 10k's for less than 300 bucks and is well worth the money. Since my previous IDE setup burned both of my cheap Seagate cuda IDE drives I had no choice but to get something worthwhile. Man, it only took a week before the IDE disks crapped out. Dont know why SCSI is so solid, but then again all real servers use them. People will eventually see the point of SCSI when they get a Digital Camcorder and dump raw video to their disk only to find that it will take forever to edit and compress them.
