Acupuncture - Poll involved - what do you think?

My wife has a BS in Biology. She didn't work after college and took care of our three children. She's interested in persuing a certification in acupuncture from the Pacific College of Oriental Medicine. We went to an open house today and I received a free acupuncture demo. I was pretty skeptical but about ten minutes after the 'Stress Reduction' needling, I began to feel more calm and at ease than I've felt in months, (my father was diagnosed with cancer, I'm his primary caretaker, and this is a major stress year at work, so I've been a stressball).

My question is, knowing many of you are Asian, and if you are it could potentially influence your opinion, what's the general opinion regarding Acupuncture?

Stress is mental and spiritual. No matter how you attempt to relieve it, it will come back. A good solid back/shoulder rub helps, but what will help more is preventing the stress in the first place.

Personally I'd rather get a massage than a thousand needles poking me.

I just don't buy into it, and I don't think it would be helpful. My wife says she had it done once and it was worthless.

I'd never do it. I feel all weird when I see a long sharp thing in somebody else, I don't think I could stand one in me.

I'm not an advocate really, It's about as effective, TO ME, as a massage.

>>>BUMP<<<
For more results, and I do notice that I feel slightly more centered. It hasn't made my stress any less, just sort of provided a slight focus and reminded me that I can handle it.

I have come to believe from personal experience that Acupuncture is effective. It's not like it's DRAMATIC, but there is something there.

A friend of my mom's used to administer it, but now does homeopathic medecine. She makes bank. It's all about the client base.

edit: Also, it's pretty effective. This woman claims that she's responsible for over a dozen births i.e. women unable to concieve have gotten treatment for her, then got pregnant.

Yeah, it's kind of state related, some of the acupuncturists we spoke to were connected to doctors practices and so get direct referrals from them.

It looks painful, but people say it works. I'm not saying I doubt it or not, but damn!

It was not nearly as painful as you might think. The needles are VERY small.

Kicks in the endorphones and blood circulation. Works with nerves to pinpoint aches. It works, but isn't a cure all.

If you believe it will work, it will. If you are convinced it won't, then you won't see any benefit.

I don't think it's as simple as that, I think there's a biological component as well.

A good friend of mine is an acupuncturist and I have had it done to me many times, mostly when he was in school training. He use to pratice on me every night (we worked an overnight shift together and had nothing to do for hours on end) I did not find any benefits of it other then the ?relax? time that comes with it, which is a part of the same reason a massage helps reduce stress. It is simply a time that you have decided to allow yourself to leave the stress behind.
As someone else said, it does not really hurt. It certainly looks far worse then it is.
