Audrey Hepburn

Dean Martin (he counts)
Gregory Peck
Katherine Hepburn
Jimmy Stewart
John Wayne

...why do I stick to this era? because lives of celebrities were not yet public fodder. The crazy shit they were into (far crazier than what we expect of today's celebrities) are generally unknown, making them easily universally beloved.

we tolerate this celebrity culture, today, for some reason, which limits any ability to universally like, much less love these people, as was once possible.

Shia "The Beef" Labeouf? He made the last Indiana Jones movie, star of the world wide acclaimed Transformer movies as well!

Lots of people listed here aren't "unanimously" liked because of their politics or something else they do or say that not all people like.

Now, Ernest Borgnine. I never met anyone who didn't like him.

Wrong.

Has anyone said "Gregory Peck" yet?

:colbert:

no one can hate Atticus Finch. ....unless, I suppose, you are a soulless jagoff.

Tom Hanks is pretty damn impossible to argue against as an almost universally liked guy. Sure there may be a few out there that won't, just because they don't like anything popular, but c'mon, Forrest Gump? Toy Story? The guy is a legend, his generation's Jimmy Stewart for sure.

Michael Caine is a good one as well. Ludicrously talented, classy, was a soldier in Korea, just an all-around good guy and well liked.

Too bad he's gone, but I thought Michael Clarke Duncan was one of those guys as well, just not as well known, but I never met anyone that didn't think he was great who knew who he was. Ditto Patrick Swayze. We may have been irritated with the Dirty Dancing craze, but he seemed a nice dude, and he gave us a lot of great cheesy films to drink beer while watching on a saturday afternoon.

I think Mel Gibson would have had a chance at this list had he not lost his damned mind, lol.

Don Cheadle is a great one that's not as well known, but super likable and comes across well in interviews. Loads of talent.

Actresses seem more difficult, I'll submit Natalie Portman as almost universally liked though, and never in a scandal. Polar opposite of bitches on wheels like Jessica Alba (early years, she seems to have mellowed out some) and leatherface ... ehhh .. oh yeah Lindsay Lohan.

I personally can't stand him. Everything he has done since training day has been nothing short of horrible.

The hell? Horrible? I'll recap with my 1/10 ratings on some of his post-Training Day films :

Man on Fire 8.5/10 - A great violent revenge film.
Inside Man 7/10 - Decent popcorn flick.
American Gangster 8/10 - Solid solid crime saga.
Unstoppable 7.5/10 - A bit silly, but good fun regardless.

Of course, there were a few I thought missed the mark, but none that were due to Denzel. At least he chooses better films than Nic Cage. Even the best actor can't save a bad script or crap directing/editing. Safe House was a good example of this, I give it 6/10, but his excellent performance was overshadowed by questionable directing and a pretty poor script.

Flight looks solid.

I'm not even a huge Denzel fan by any means, but I just don't think any legit film fan could honestly say he hasn't been in a good film since Training Day. I'd put American Ganster over Training Day any day of the week.

Imho 'horrible' describes films that you can't make it through, or regret watching, things that rate 4/10 and below.

These are some excellent choices. I really like your point about Mel Gibson. If only he had not gone bat-shit insane.

As far as actresses, I must disagree with Natalie Portman but I must admit that I can not give a logical reason why. Maybe it's because I hated V for Vendetta or maybe it was because she was in "the prequels."

How about
Diane Keaton?

Hm.

Katie Holmes (I couldn't name one role she's been in though :\ )

Peter Sellers

Kate Beckinsale

Steve Martin

Bill Murrary

ooo, yeah, but perhaps too political for some?

Mel Gibson....I find it interesting that many assume he went insane. I think it's a pretty safe bet that he was always batshit...just took a while for it to filter out to the public (sure, he blew that filter off in spectacular fashion, himself, but...)

Yeah, just a matter of exposure. He's been a wackyfundy for a long time.

Maybe I should clarify and say that I have not enjoyed any of the movies that I have seen with him in it since training day. That includes Man on Fire and Inside man. I have not seen american gangster or unstoppable, and I don't plan to because I'm simply not a fan and I can't get into anything he does. With few exceptions, he plays every role exactly the same (IMO). Not my cup of tea.

As for Nic Cage - apart from Raising Arizona I cannot sit through anything he is in.

This thread turned from a list of actors people unanimously like into.... a list of actors.

It already started like that. It's pretty much impossible to find someone that everyone likes as people's tastes vary too much.
I love The Green Mile, but I never liked Forest Gump. I never liked the Rocky movies much, but Stallone does have some decent comedies (Death Race 2000 and such). I never liked Tom Cruise or Mel Gibson much, although the second used to be less full of himself in his movies.

This being ATOT it surprises me that we don't yet have a list of porn stars in this topic.

Let's see who doesn't like this one:
Bruce Campbell
