PC Gaming wont die but too many of the good companies do die because of Corporate buyouts.

I think this is more about lining the pockets of each of the companies execs with hundreds of millions of more dollars. Let's hope this creates more jobs at Vivendi/Activision/Blizzard.

They haven't made a good game since Starcraft so maybe with this buyout they'll finally break their streak of mediocrity.

Idk, hte Warcraft Adventures Alpha leak I'm playing around with seems pretty good. Not as good as Escape from Monkey Island but still it looks like it could have been a great game....

Blizzard have been owned by someone else since before they released Warcraft. They have changed hands through mergers 3 times since then. This makes the 4th time.

Contrary to popular opinion, it's unlikely that there will suddenly be a huge change at Blizzard due to this, since it's not like Blizzard are being bought by a new company, nor are they really changing hands.
They are currently 100% owned by Vivendi Games, who are owned by Vivendi.
Now they will be part of Activision Blizzard, who will be 52~68% owned by Vivendi, so there isn't really any change except in how the company is organised and who they are tied with.
I don't forsee Activision magically managing to mess up all of Blizzards games, since they probably won't have anything to do with developing them etc.

I think its a great move for Blizzard as it never seemed they were that happy with Vivendi since the D2 days. If any dev house has proven they're autonomous of their publisher, its Blizzard. They take their time with games (LOL!), and with Activision it looks like they'll have more financial backing along with well-established inroads to the console market.

I can see Blizzard concentrating a little more on the consoles now.

Didn't they start out on consoles?

I definitely did not see this one coming.

Interesting possibilities here. Whether they will end up having good effects or not has yet to be seen.

The bad thing is that Blizzard's name could be soiled with all the crappy game releases from Activision.
"Blizzard? Are those the same shitty guys who did Soldier of Fortune 4 - Blackwater's Revenge by Activision Blizzard?

They claim this will not affect their games at all, but I'm fearing for the worst here. This may be the day PC gaming died. I really hope my fears are incorrect though.

Give me a break, PC gaming is never going to die.

No, but it can and will implode in on itself for a time. It already has in the past and its about due for another 'cleansing'.

Might be time to revisit some of those stockpiled mods that you've never gotten around to.

Lots of misinformation in here.

Activision doesn't "own" Blizzard or vice versa. As was posted earlier, Vivendi and Activision basically merged (I assume they picked the Blizzard name because it's the biggest attention grabber). Blizzard is still "Blizzard Entertainment, Inc." and nothing about them is changing. Same staff, same offices, same schedules (eg. one game every decade) Read more here:

I guess its also fewer companies for EA to swallow in the future. They just need to take Activision Blizzard, Ubisoft, and Take 2 Interactive and they'll own the bulk of the E-game industry. :(

I can't believe that we the people still let this happen. Year after year corporations grow bigger and bigger, swallowing up everything weaker and becoming state like entities.
There is no "free market" in this. What is the initial investment sum to enter a market like Xbox consoles or the entertainment industry when you have a Godzilla like EA?
Or try to start up a search engine against Google? Laughing my ass off...

Even fields like emergency management and soldiers are now privatised and outsorced to corporations.
Those funky B-movie sci-fi stories like Shadowrun seem to have been prophetic. As long as corporations have profit on their flag they will never be a replacement for democratic administration and we will continue to slide into a new middle age.
With the robber barons now being CEOs and we are the new consumer peasants.

Sorry for the political rant, I'm generally upset about this topic. :)

I don't see any big deal with this. Sounds to me as if there would be a bigger problem if you were an Activision fan, as basically Vivendi is swallowing them up. As for what the two might do together, who knows, maybe Call of Warcraft. :D

Companies have to do whatever it takes to make the shareholder's happy. Happy Shareholders = doing things that make them more money. IF the SEC finds no reason for this merger to go through, then it's legit.

I really wouldn't be surprised to one day see Activision being dragged into court for monopolizing the gaming industry. :)

Not sure why this deal is being done for reasons other than money. The Blizzard / WoW brand name is well known thanks to commercials, word of mouth, tv episodes, etc.

Dude that was terrible. Not the semi-racist slant...just the comedic content.

For those of you who fear this merge, all you need to do is consider this quote. Activision will not be holding nearly as much weight over Blizzard compared to how much weight Blizzard will hold over Activision. I trust that Vivendi knows what they are doing. They have let the Blizz guys call the shots with little interference for quite some time now and the shear numbers show how successful they have been. There is no way Vivendi would ever allow Activision to damage that. If they even try, expect some of the big shots at Activison to get laid off really quick. My guess is that Vivendi plans on keeping the two of them separate for the most part with exception of maybe some experimentation with a completely different game. Vivendi probably just wants a piece of the console game market $$$. We'll see what happens..

This makes vivendi a bigger publisher than EA games.

Which is a good thing considering the track record of the companies involved.

well, blizzard is a dev, activision is a publisher, right? does blizzard publish their own games also? i guess if they do, then maybe you can compare. activision has released more games than blizzard so its only natural they would have more games to have more hits.

Agreed. I would vote for Actilizzard which someone had mentioned earlier.
