So yes, people in the military are often there because they fucked something up, but it doesn't mean they are of poor ability, and a lot of them go on to be good looking, smart, fascinating internet posters who are very successful with the dudes. Most of these come from the Army.

fixed... ;)

how quickly Powell gets eaten up and spit out by the republican smear machine.

shameful

It is. 6 years ago he was the Republican poster boy of a self-made no-bullshit non-partisan non-hack.

Too bad that he was such a "no man" that Condi had to backstab him to remove the threat to her power, after being hoodwinked by the bullshit intel Bushites fed him.

One of his sperm has more honor, guts, and respectibility than McCain, Palin, and every other Republican attacking him.

So you believe that Powell was hoodwinked into believing bogus intel? If true it doesn't speak to well to his "judgement", now does it?

Your blind faith in him might be easier to swallow if Powell hadn't been the investigator who tried his best to sweep the My Lai massacre under the rug.

To bad McCain doesn't return the support!

But, maybe a fund raiser in California was more important than the troops?

Who cares? McCain is losing in more than a few military states right now, even if this were true the troops are outnumbered by popular vote. Hell my buddy (naval pilot) just voted for Nader and said none of his buddies are voting for McCain, they don't think there's a point to being in Iraq. So much for achieving "victory" in Iraq.

Your buddy is an officer as are most of his buddies most likely. I would imagine the poll would show officers favoring Obama and enlisted favoring McCain. I say this only because of the educational differences.
Yep he is. You may be onto something there about the educational differences of officers for O (or 3rd party) and grunts for M.

I think the first impression people have of the military is that of the grunt. Most likely a kid fresh from high school without the aptitude or financial ability to go to college. They forget that many members of the military are officers, some of which are very highly educated and intelligent. I've known several PhDs that have served after being educated because the branches do have science careers. The military is also the best way to get into certain fields such as intelligence and even my field (information security).

And, of course, many (if not the majority) of these officers went to large liberal universities as part of a ROTC program. My boss is a pretty progressive guy and he spent the better part of a decade in the Air Force and got his Master's from TAMU.

Hell, I'm thinking about serving to A) boost my career and/or B) get more education. If money isn't your only motivator in life, there are plenty of science and engineering careers in the military and they don't all involve building bigger bombs.

Actually this survey had a higher percentage of officers, but alos a higher percentage of older people then the military averages.

The conservatism in the military has much more to do with the first term/not first term divide than it does the officer/enlisted one. If you have not resigned your commission or have re-enlisted, you are far more likely to be conservative. Far far more likely.

You mean the poor bastards that are actually in harm's way are contributing to the guy who promises to get them home ASAP by a 6 to 1 margin?

I would have thought it would have been higher then that.

GWB&Rumsfeld have done a lot of damage to the military, they have basically broken the reserve system, and what they did to Shinseki is beyond shameful. Future military austerity budgets and Rumsfeld taking away their toys is not going to sit well with many career military. There does not appear to be a Powell like figure able to redefine what new military abuse is.

The top brass has to be especially in strange position, they do not know who their next commander and chief will be, and after Powell moved to Obama, its going to get them questioning. Anyone who thinks that you can get by in the military by being dumb, does not understand how technical our military has become. The GOP is going to have to do some military fence mending at a minimum, and a President Obama could do much to win the military constituency.

We could have saved thousands of American lives, trillions of dollars and the credibility and honor of the United States of America in the eyes of our own citizens and the world if voters had figured that out before making Bush the Commandodo In Chief. :(

I'm quite sure how LL's quote and your statement are related...? What does the ever-increasing intellect of our troops have to do with Bush getting elected?
