Active shooter training

I just got an email flyer for active shooter training. Should I go ahead and take it? I never saw myself as the active shooter type. It's not that I'm not a sociopath, it's that I don't really care for loud noises. I guess I could call the company and see if they have something quieter.

What makes an "active" shooter different from a regular shooter? Do you go jogging between sessions at the range or something?

I'm not sure. According to the brochure...

Preparation, planning, and training are the keys to help minimize your risks and increase your chances of survival regardless of whether an unexpected violent encounter occurs at work or in a public place.

So it sounds like being an active shooter is more involved than simply shooting the schnitzel.

Active shooting involves moving around, shooting from corners, etc. Closer to matching what you'd really have to deal with if you were (for example) dealing with a home invasion.

Much more involved than standing stationary shooting some paper.
 
i would think this would be how to hide yourself, lock the doors, try to contact police, and then safely evacuate.

Also in terms of prevention to help recognize potential workplace violence indicators
 
It's training on how to HANDLE an active shooter situation.

We just had Active Shooter training at work.
It teaches you to communicate the threat to the whole building (PA system, scream, etc) and police (call ASAP), to escape as quickly as possible, to hunker down and lock your doors if you can't escape and to fight back if you have to.

Pretty common sense stuff, but in light of all the shootings in recent years, going through your plan in your head gives you some advantage.

Me? I'm breaking the window and running away.
 
I'm in the physics classroom. At last, an opportunity to showcase the fire power of all the projectile motion apparatus! Well, that's if the active shooter survives the electricity apparatus that's hooked to the door knob. Or maybe a swift application of the 5 foot long bed of nails?

Sounds a bit like laser tag. Hey that could be fun.
 
i got to witness some active shooter training last year. at 00:00 sharp, every piece of police hardware for 20 miles descended on the mall. multiple teams practiced entries at different doors. i wish i could have seen the indoors/bad guy portion of the exercise.
 
I played that one call of duty game where I gunned down the entire airport. I'm good on the training.

My office is ~20' square with a hall that goes to the bathroom. No back door. Running/hiding aren't going to work. Hmmm...maybe that's why I keep a pistol on my desk. Fight 1st, I say.
