i have created two domains with two win2k servers. i am trying to start active directory replication. my problem is that i cannot get the two to trust one another. when i try to make a trust i get the message "RPC not available". then i tried having one server logon try to logon under one domain and i get the message that there is no available domain. what am i doing wrong?

did you make them two domains in the same forest? is one a root domain and the other a child domain, or are they two different domains and you want to join them together into the same forest? The only way that Ihave done it is when I create a new domain and make it part of the other forest, but root of its own domain. I haven't done it, but if you try to add an additional domain controller in the same domain, it might let you join the new forest, don't remember though, and don't have anything to try it on now. If you don't have the trust under active directory domains and trusts (if you do, go to properties and click verify and see if its already working) you can set up a nontransitive trust between the two domains even if they are not in the same forest.

The main reason as to why you are getting this error message is probably due to the reason that your Windows 2000 machines can't find the SRV or A record in DNS for your servers or the FQDN that you have created.

What you need to do is when you run DCPROMO, you have the option of creating another domain within the forest as a root domain. This will put the proper SRV and A records within DDNS, and DCPROMO will automatically create a transitive two-way Kerberos trust between the two seperate domains.

PM me if you have any other questions.
