Howdy,

I'm starting a new job soon (hopefully) and one thing I'd be working with is Active Directory. I've never used it before but would at least like to know what it is to know if I already know the concepts and just need the firsthand experience.

Is it just for configuraing and administering a Windows Network as far as Users, Servers, Rights, etc? What else is it?

Thanks.

Googled it for you.

What Is the Active Directory?
The Active Directory is the directory service included with Windows 2000 Server. It extends the features of previous Windows-based directory services and adds entirely new features. The Active Directory is secure, distributed, partitioned, and replicated. It is designed to work well in any size installation, from a single server with a few hundred objects to thousands of servers and millions of objects. The Active Directory adds many new features that make it easy to navigate and manage large amounts of information, generating time savings for both administrators and end users.

lots of info from MS

No, that's just part of the job I'd have to learn so I figured I'd at least learn that ?What is it" part ahead of time and let them train me on the "Here's how it works" part. :)

I forgot to try google. I searched at Microsoft.com and as usual got tons of unrelated stuff. Ah well.

Well, I don't know what Active Directory is either, and that Google definition didn't help at all. :)
