Activating VPN kills the local internet connection?

I remember seeing something about this. The problem I'm having is that every time I activate a VPN connection, any previously connected (internet) programs die/disconnect. Is this fixable? (WinXP)

Also, can you have multiple VPN instances open (to different VPN servers)?

Yes, uncheck ?use default gateway on remote network? for vpn properties. You may have computer name resolution/connection problems on the network your connecting to after this, if so add a static route instead.

It already is.

Unless the VPN concentrator is set to allow "split tunneling", the VPN is the only path to any network anywhere. This is a security feature.

With the VPN down, you can resume your previous connections on the Internet.

bingo, split tunneling is bad (allowing local connections during a VPN session)
