Activating cookie within an email?

Is it possible to code an email with Javascript so that it drops a cookie on a user? Do email clients by default generally enable or disable cookies?
 
I don't think most email clients do anything with cookies because they're seperate from your browser. How would your email client know which web browsers to give the cookie to?
