I don't think those are rules in any meaningful sense. They're just a general guide to help people remember how something should be pronounced. It's like the 'i' before 'e' rule for spelling. I'm sure there are plenty of exceptions. Gynecology for example.
I can understand using that as an argument if a 'j' sound is just your personal preference though.
