Acronyms that confuse you

Every time I see certain acronyms, I think, at least for a second, that they mean something other than what's intended. For instance, whenever anyone mentions "CVS", the pharmacy, I think, "Concurrent Versions System?" I'm sure there are others, but I can't think of them right now.

So, what acronyms confuse you when you see them?

GIF because people say the correct way to pronounce it is "Jiff". I thought the G in Gif was for Graphic. How do you get the J sound from the word Graphic?

I always called it Jiff, in the same vein as Jeff vs. Geoff. I never heard a single person say it with a hard G IRL until the pronunciation wars started.

I also say Apple O-S-X instead of OS Ten.

What about when Gears of War and God of War were both popular franchises?

If I don't recognize it, I google it and get an Urban Dictionary definition. Then immediately regret it when I learn that it's an acronym for eating vomit off the rear end of a redhead.

Oh, yes, I remember one. I used to work on testing for an online cash register for restaurant food sales. It was known as a Point of Sale system, or POS. It really did not work very well. 😀

If you're in the Air Force, not only do you have military acronyms to contend with, but you also have aviation acronyms.

The F-35 has STOVL capability. It can carry ASRAAMs, JASSMs, ande JDAMs. You can fly to a VORTAC using a SID like normal commercial aircraft operators.

Just a basic idea of what I'm referring to.

Exactly. It's with a hard 'g.' The people who started using the 'j' sound probably didn't know it was an acronym or what it meant. Besides, who sees 'g' in a word they don't know and assumes it's pronounced 'j' unless you think it might be foreign like say, French. Le jeef.
