True Image Personal 2010 is actually a cut down version of the regular application. There’s no support for incremental or differential backups, for instance; the scheduler only supports a “weekly” option; and the program can’t run the System State, Email or Application Settings backup type. These options are still displayed on the menus, but are greyed out. If you’d like to upgrade and get access to all of these features, and more, click “Get the full version” on the toolbar and follow the instructions.

Yeah, just got around to installing it.
I guess it basically is the exact same version that you can download form Seagate or WD, except it isn't tied to any HD brand.
Still useful for backups.

When I installed this one I discovered I still have the version from 2007 that was a free promo a few years ago.

What may happen is a few months from now Acronis may run some kind of upgrade special for the full version.

As it is, kinda lame, only useful when you need to switch to a new drive and the software is free for the drive anyway.

As an alternative to Acronis I have been using Macrium Reflect and have been very happy with it. The free version does everything I need except differential backups.

If you want to just get your real key (to install on a networkless machine for instance), go here:

https://www.acronis.com/my/box/oem/

and use the "Serial Code" from the deal as your "Stub Code", you'll get an e-mail with a link to activate your Acronis account and then that link will give you the real serial number which can be placed into the program. The "Activate" button validates the serial number locally and lets you run now.

Unfortunately, even the recovery media disables cloning, so I too am left wondering ... "WTF?" I guess the $20 upgrade to full 2012 may be useful, but this is a lot less exciting deal than I hoped 🙁

You have to register, confirm, then you can download. It's a pretty big file, 115MB. I've heard tons of good things about Acronis, I'm used to Ghost but old versions. I should really get into Acronis TI.

Acronis will work with any drive right? Where as if you have the software that came with a drive and want to do something with a different manufacturers drive using that software. Its hit or miss?

The Macrium bootable CD I used is a stripped down version of the program. The latest version, however, offers a new bootable version based on WinPE, but you have to jump through a few hoops to create it.

Correct.
The Acronis available for WD ("WD edition") and Seagate ("Seagate edition") will only work if you have a drive that is from WD or Seagate plugged in.

Or in other words, if you install "WD edition" and your WD died, and you didn't have another one, you couldn't restore or backup anything.
Same thing applies for the "Seagate edition", and your seagate dies on you.

This version doesn't care about the make of the HD, and it will restore/backup just fine with any brand HD.

BTW, if you really want to clone, then you need to backup drive, then restore to the drive you want. It is a two step process, instead of one.
