I got a free copy of Acronis TrueImage Home 2009 free with a purchase of a WD 1.5TB drive a while back from Newegg, but haven't gotten around to using it. All my drives are WD though, so I may end up using the WD version on a secondary system or something; thanks for the heads-up.
According to the Acronis site though, version 11 is 2 versions out of date now, with 2009 and 2010 out. Any idea if WD may update?
Darkrogue: If you actually got a copy of the retail version of Acronis I'd definately use that over the giveaway version-the giveaway is very good but it is a crippled version as I indicated earlier.
Oh, yeah I'll use mine since it's newer, although it was an OEM copy, not a retail - not that it should make much of a difference.
I was just thinking I may use WD's version for a PC I'm building for my parents, as I don't know if I can use my full copy on more than one machine.
Does anyone have a list of specific differences with WD vs Retail? From WD's knowledgebase it also seems like they've "discontinued" DataLifeguard Tools in favor of the new Acronis thing, so I'm wondering if they incorporated a bunch of the basic testing features into it or not.
Has anyone used the Backup utilities built into Windows 7 to clone and restore their system? I was reading about it and it sounded reasonably powerful, and comes with the Op Sys.
Windows 7 does have a very nice "System Image" utility built in for backups. But, unfortunately, you have to image the Win7 OS drive by default (though you can add other drives to it.) If you could just image any drive you wanted, excluding the OS, it would be much nicer.
firstly i have used acronis products since ver7, 7 and 8 were iffy and unreliable, ver 9,10 and 2009 have performed without issue, i upgrade often but also buy stand alone products when needed, ver 11 was very unreliable with vista and xp, so dont be suprised if it fails to recover, now if ver 2009 hit the wd site i will download and use, ver 11 = ill pass.

I thought these were only in the Professional version of 7, not the Home Premium. I have Vista Business, which has built in imaging and backup. I have used this a couple of times and it worked good.
When I get my version of Win7 Home, I plan on making an image file using Acronis, booting from the CD, to a separate hard drive. I will do this once per week.
