... dead; NE wants $39.99 before $10 rebate. (item number N82E16832200023)

I just put it in my cart,

$49.99

less $20 instant rebate,
less $ 5 for code EMCKGHH67
less $10 for a mail in rebate

$50 less $35 in discounts = $15

I see it as $29.99 w/ $20 instant savings before rebate, $24.99 before rebate with the promo code, free shipping, and $14.99 after rebate.

Yes, when I search "Acronis" at NE I see both a $29.99 and $39.99 version of "True Image Home 2011." They have different item and model numbers, but they look like the same product. Strange.

Edit: I'm in for $15. I have a love/hate relationship with Acronis, but at $15 I have more love than hate. For each yearly version, I always have to hunt around/wait for the magical "update" (both for the program and rescue media) that actually works best for my hardware. I then have to permantely associate all my backups/rescue media to this update because I found subsequent updates can break Acronis for my hardware.

Once I have this all figured out though, Acronis works well. It has bailed me out of bad situations more than once.

The "hottest" deal is to use the free versions of Acronis that work with any Seagate or WD hard drive. These versions work great for cloning and backups. You can download the software from the Seagate and WD websites. These versions check to see that you have a Seagate or WD hard drive, but you can have one in an external enclosure connected by USB and the software usually works fine. I have bought Acronis in the past, but have been using the free versions for the last few years, and always purchase Seagate or WD drives because of this feature.

The free version also doesn't do incremental backups which is a deal-killer to me. My introduction to Acronis was through these free versions, so it was a win-win for the company and me.

The free WD version doesn't partition SSDs properly.

I've only ever cloned and restored using Windows XP, so I've always had to fix the alignment afterwards when cloning to an SSD. A bit of a shame it doesn't handle this properly if the drive being cloned is already aligned properly.

That's what I saw, on NE, $39.99. It doesn't matter to me. I already have ATI Home 2010, I signed up for the promo, the final price was $24.99.

I was going to upgrade, but there were reported problems running it on Win 7 64 bit, what I have is OK, so I didn't take the chance.

Plus, there's a ton of quality backup programs for free. Macrium, Easeus Todo (a great freebie), Paragon Backup & Recovery 2011 (Advanced Free). Not to mention the free versions of Acronis that comes with WD & Seagate drives (I have a 1 of each, installed in enclosures). The ATI Home 2010 was a gift from a friend who had won it, and gave me the key.

I've never paid for backup software, and don't intend to.

The free WD version doesn't partition SSDs properly.

Non free version of Acronis TI does not partitition SSD properly as well. There are several posts on Acronis forums that state that TI maintains alignment only when whole drive is restored. If original alignment is correct it would stay the same after a restore.

If only one partition is restored with TrueImage (any version to the best of my knowledge) the alignment is incorrect, even if you create a partition in Win 7 before the restore. TI recreates a partition for the restore.

Fortunately Paragon Alignment correction tool handles realignment relatively easily.
