Acronis True Image 9.0? How to increase partion size

I am trying to put a bigger Hard drive in my laptop by backing up the disk image to a USB hard drive and restoring it on a new drive. The old drive is 20G the new one is 80G. True image restored the drive but it restores only the 20G partition the rest of the drive is wasted. Is there anything that will do this with just one software package? I don't mind buying a package if it will work.

True image does not increase partition size. However, Acronis Disk Director suite does accomplish that task, and is just as good as true image.

There are free alternatives, I believe some Linux boot CD's have the ability to partition drives as well. But I'm not quite sure on what free programs are out there, but i'm sure someone here can tell you.

Actually, look under the Thread titled "Freeware programs and applications" here in the software forum. You will probably find your answer there.

Disk directory does not backup the disk it just manipulates partitions and such. I don't want to buy two software packages to perform a simple backup and restore to a larger hard drive. All I am doing is putting a bigger drive in my laptop. True Image works great for that but it won't let you install to a bigger hard drive. At least it waste and increase over the old drive.

I own both True image and disk director so I know what each program does, and obviously True image will not perform a partition increase, therefore either buy disk director or look at the thread i mentioned for a free alternative. Otherwise you are out of luck.

However, I believe that true image can restore an image to a larger drive without losing the space like what has happened to you. You may want to try to research a bit more (google) or on acronis's website. they have forums there which are very useful.

If you would have checked the free programs thread, the first link under system tools is this:

I looked at those free programs and the screen shot is very kryptic. I did not want to spend too much time going down the wrong road. I believe I already downloaded that one as part of the ultimate boot CD and it all looked like greek to me.

TrueImage will increase the size of the partition in going from smaller to larger if you use the CLONE function, manual, and select PROPORTIONAL.

Easier way with TrueImage, Restore by partition instead of by drive. It will then give you the option to change partition sizes.

You are correct Trueimage will change partitions on restore and you can change it after the fact by adding then removeing a secure zone in the unused space. When you remove the secure zone is asks if you want to put the unused space in the main partition. I just bought the full version. The trial version is limited dispite what their websight says. It seems to work well even with USB hard drives. I had no problems backing up my laptop hard drive and then restoring it to the 80G new drive. I had to get the full version to open the partition up to 80G using the trick above.

saying you were using the trial version really would have helped from the start.
