Acronis Image and new HDD

I was wondering if you guys could help me out? I have Acronis 10.0 to back up an image of my HDD. I think my HDD may be failing. Can I buy a new HDD and install the image on that drive? Any info would be greatly appreciated.

An Acronis image (back up) does not contain an operating system.

You can go 2 ways;

1. Install the OS on your new drive, and then restore the image.
2. Use the clone feature of Acronis, and make an identical, bootable copy, of your old drive to the new.

A backup image has to be restored. The best way to move to a new drive is cloning - then it is immediately usable w/o restoration.

But, yes, if you restore the TI image using TI software it will work,
 
If you buy a Seagate hard drive as your replacement, you can use their cloning software to move an image to the new drive.

Basically it involves using the program prepared Rescue Media and doing it outside of Windows. Just about all of these procedures are well documented in the official Acronis Forum.

Yes, as another poster said, drive imaging software commonly ships with retail drives.

Another choice is Acronis True Image - v11 is a current release, selling for around $20 if you can catch a sale/rebate.

I just restored my C drive (including the OS) via an Acronis 11 image to a clean HDD. No problem at all. Acronis 10 will work as well... If you make (or made) an Acronis boot disk, just boot to it and then find the image to restore and the target disk to restore to. If you're putting it on a clean drive, you'll have to have the old drive hooked up to your computer to be able to access it.

Thanks for the info guys! One more question, should there be anything particular about the new drive if I want to clone? Like the size? Does it need to be the same size?
 
FWIW, I used Acronis to clone a 160g Samsung PATA with three partitions to a new WD 320 SATA with no problem. On the first boot XP had to install or reinstall a couple of drivers but other than that it went very well.

I'm with him, I've used the clone tool on non-identical drives, even running on different adapters.

Also, if you restore an image to a disk with data, it will be erased but not cause any _problems_.
