Acronis 2010 and GPT - what other backup programs are recommended?

Having just discovered that my Acronis 2010 does not support GPT unless I pay an additional $30 to get the "plus pack" I am curious what alternatives there are for backups (that support GPT) which the folks here in the AT forums have come to trust and use?

I have win7 64bit, have not invested any energy/time into the built-in backup utilities...any one have anything good to say about the Microsoft backup solution in win7?

Backup and recovery are a major reason why I haven't explored GPT much.

A quick check seems to indicate that the built-in Win7/Server 2008 R2 system backups don't support backup/restore of volumes larger than 2 TB size (which is usually why you'd be using GPT).

I like the built-in Win7/2008R2 full system backup utility. But I couldn't find evidence that it'll support anything bigger than 2 TB at this time.

hmmm...so this would be one of those "don't jump on the bandwagon too soon" situations.

I don't need GPT, my 2TB drives can still be managed as MBR. So MBR it is then.

Sorry about that lol. Appears that the responder is the lazy one. :) The workstation one that I use comes with it already but that's $79.

It appears there is no size limitation but the lack of mirroring support is a drawback.

I also received a 5% discount not much but still when I contacted a sales rep.

BESR 2010 - go download the free trial - and download the ISO vista PE disk - it will add your drivers to make sure your net/raid are loaded - you know to pop in the custom iso cd and boot to restore when needed. comes with a pc anywhere host so grandma can swap the bad drive out and you can remote the restore over network/vpn.

acronis = shenanigans and their product was unstable for me.

unstable means when i say full backup VSS skip bad sector skip unused sectors AES-256 high compression - every night 7 days a week - i should not see one single failure or corrupted session - i could not reach that level on their software (this choice was made 2 years ago). It may have improved but you know the saying burn me once.

lol no worries mate, I appreciate the fact you took the time to try and help me out to begin with  thanks for taking my ribbing in stride :)

Emulex thanks for the tip - I will check it out. Acronis has been nothing but a pain in the ass when doing full system restores with my hardware (boot disk resides on areca controller)...BESR + iso disk could be just the ticket.

I gave up on Acronis Idontcare. I feel the same way you did. Moved over to WHS and the backup's have worked without flaw. I have wasted my cash on Acronis for the last time.

is WHS cool with server products (bare metal imaging?) besr doesn't really care since its just that a total image file and quite frankly 2008/vista 2008R2/win7 look the same
