acoustic edge=garbage?

I recently put together this system and chose the phillips acoustic edge for my sound card. The system runs great, @1.2 GHz, 512 ram and w/ win98 se. Right now I just have two speakers, and am planning on moving to a 5.1 speaker system later, but whenever I play any sound files, there's a weird crackling noise in the background...has anyone else seen (heard) this problem? Is it the sound card or something else? The crackle is pretty low, but it's definately there...Any suggestions would be appreciated...

Have you tried other speakers? The AE has better sound quality than the Live!, but it's possible our speakers are the culprit.

Hi phhnyc
I've just got an acoustic edge card too, and ran into similar problems 🙁
I get an irritating crackle whenever I play mp3s, etc.
It seems that this is a known problem with VIA chipset motherboards(I have one).Motherboard driver updates have reduced the crackle, but not eliminated it.
Some sites mentioned DMA as a culprit, but disabling DMA hasn't helped too!
Anyone else know anything about the crackle problem?
Thanks,
drone

I have an Acoustic Edge on an EPoX 8KTA3 w/ a T-bird@ 1GHz and am getting excellent sound out of it (Win98, 512MB RAM, front: packard bell speakers, rear: mini rack stereo setup). The sound is clear enough that while watching a DVD, a phone rang (in the movie), and family members started asking whose phone just rang.

I have my AE on a gigabyte GA-7DX and it sounds great also. My other machine has a SBLive value in it and the AE card blows the value away. Very crisp sound from it.

I had the same problem with crackling 'til I updated the drivers, and the crackling disappeared. For the PSC706 update, go here
