ACK! I may be transferring waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay up north! (???)

Here's a map of where it is... (population: 6,000)

It has it's advantages and disadvantages:

Advantage:
- still making same money as in downtown Toronto.
- cost of living is WAY less.
- friendlier people
- nestled in the foothills of the La Cloche Mountains
- more job stability
- no traffic, nicer atmosphere in which to live

Disadvantage:
- 5-6 hours away from friends and family
- don't know anyone
- need to travel 1 hour to nearest major city (Sudbury) to get stuff other than the basics
- no broadband (that I am aware of)
- cold (!) in the winter

Decisions, decisions. If you were in my shoes, what would you do/what advice would you give? Anyone been in a similar situation?

Personally, I'd do it. That is because I love outdoor sports and would love to live in nature. What kind of job is it?

That's the downfall of working for Spacely Sprockets...........................

One mess up and you're shipped off to outer MOONgolia~!:Q

Are you single? Do you intend to try to date in a town of 6000? I would say that if you are married already you might like it, otherwise.....

<< Personally, I'd do it. That is because I love outdoor sports and would love to live in nature. What kind of job is it? >>

I love outdoor sports too. I'm just worried that it'll be hard to meet people my own age (24) ...

It's a telco job... supporting/troubleshooting the equipment in the area. I have a an office job that I am fairly unhappy in right now. (because of its location in the heart of downtown Toronto)

if you're reasonably attractive, you can be the token "hot new guy" you see whenever there is a small town in a movie. where all the women swoon, and all the men hate you because you're a "pretty city boy" 😛

Heh, wouldn't that be nice! 😛

I'd consider myself average, although it's hard to rate yourself. eakers is the only one from here that has met me in real life, so maybe she can chime in?

It sounds like you still live at home with Mom and Dad.

Go! Don't even think about it. You are 24 years old and you have the opportunity to have an adventure. This isn't the end of your life, nor is it the rest of your life. It is just a job assignment to a place where you will have the opportunity to meet new people and experience new things.

On the other hand, if you are a complete wuss, perhaps you should stay at home where it is comfortable.

If thats the main reason, then go, by all means go 🙂

No, actually I don't live at home...

... but thanks for the kick in the ass nonetheless. 🙂

Why don't you drive up there and see what its like? I find the people in small towns to be intolerable, but that's just me and the small number of small towns I've been to (mostly in California and the state of Washington).

Umm, life isn't like TV. People in smaller towns generally get married pretty young. In a town of 6000 the only girls likely to be available to date are going to be 18. If you are comfortable dating girls that young and that immature you might have a good time. But consider, with only 6000 residents, you need to assume about 5% are going to be in the dateable age range, more than half will be married and any that are good looking and available will probably either be psyco or looking for their ticket out.

Just based on my experience in smaller towns on the US side of the border, but our cultures aren't that different. People in their early 20's that grow up in towns that size want OUT, those that stay you probably won't want.

oh, hello mr. ten foot pole.

*kat. <-- 😀 refusing to answer cuz there is no right answer.

If you are used to big cities, and all of the luxuries and annomnity that they provide, you will hate living in a small town.

Everyone knows everyone. Your neighbors will know when you work. The talk of the town will be when so-and-so got divorced. The gas station and the family dinner are the "in" places to hang out.

Yeh. If you aren't used to it, it will be a shock.

Satellite broadband & a subscription to Playboy seem to be in order...

I grew up in a town of 2K in South Dakota, you should be able to find someone to date in a town of 6K, & @ 24, dating an 18 year old isn't such an unheard of thing...

Church is a safe neutral meeting place for females in a small town, the older women in the church will set you up with the simgle women so fast your head will spin.

<< eakers is the only one from here that has met me in real life, so maybe she can chime in? >>

The answers in her pants.. along with half the farm animals in Canada.

Your social life will probably suck unless this place has a lot of hotties, which in a population of 6000 would probably be less than 60 best case. 🙂

"- no broadband (that I am aware of)" :Q that makes it an insta-no-way-in-hell for me =). i cant even visit people who dont have broadband.....56k is soooooo.....depressing lol. try it i guess, you can go down there and get some more work experience... i guess lol, also save some cash from the lesser costs of living. you're a brave man in my opinion for even considering moving into the middle of nowhere and not just the middle of nowhere but the middle of nowhere in the middle of nowhere canada "EH"......god i hated when people said that when i was up there, i felt like shooting the bastards....i hate "EH" arrrrrrrrrrrggggghhhhhhh...........yeah yeah yeah i know, i need sleep....

Well...if you save $300 a month in rent you could always set yourself up with a fractional T1 to use up that extra cash 😀
