ACK - ftp problem

ok, so I am working on my new site and am trying to install Gallery.

Everytime I upload the file ".htaccess" it does not appear in the target directory. I have even tried uploading an empty file and renaming it. When I rename it, it disappears.

You are putting everything (including your index.html and .htaccess file) in the public_html directory, right?

What are you using to ftp?

A . in the front hides the file in Linux IIRC.

I transferred the entire Gallery directory into public_html (using WS_FTP).

Bully for Linux. How do I CHMOD it then?

there is a setting in most ftp clients to show hidden files. Just look for that setting.

CHMOD'ing the file won't let you see the file if thats what you are thinking. Removing the . in front will make it not hidden.

EDIT: I guess I should ask first, are you transferring it from Windows to Linux?

No but if I CHMOD it before renaming it, I should be ok, right?

And how do I rename a hidden file - I can't see it...

Try this go to your cPanel http://www.mwilding.com/cpanel

Click File Manager

Click on the YELLOW FOLDER ICON to the left of public_html

Do you see a file named .htaccess ?

I can send you a link to another ftp program that I use. It allows you to change filenames just like in windows (F2)

If all you need to do is be able to see the file, then post which ftp prog you use, I'm sure somebody knows how to turn on the option to see hidden files.

He's using ws_ftp... I'm not familiar enough with it to be any help.

I wonder if there's a setting in WS_FTP where you can view hidden files?

Make sure that your pictures aren't huge like 1MB because you only have 1GB bandwidth and "the AT effect" will suck through that within an hour.
