I compressed one of my storage drives in XP and it has now disappeared after giving a BSOD that said something about a kernel page fault. What can I do to recover my hd without losing my data?

BIOS has even stopped detecting my drive.

If the BIOS won't even detect your drive, you're pretty screwed. Find another hard drive and make sure the BIOS and controller are working. If they are, then try your drive in another computer if possible. If it doesn't work there, then the drive has failed. You can try getting another drive of the exact same type and swapping the circuit board, that is sometimes enough to get the drive running so you can recover your data; most people look for a used drive on auction sites or refurb drives from resellers. If THAT doesn't work, your data is lost unless you want to pay for a recovery service which is expensive.
